RAGTIME Reviews
re: RAGTIME Reviews#26
Posted: 11/15/09 at 7:26pmIt's funny. I actually agree with that review almost 100%. I thought Marcia Milgrom Dodge didn't completely hit the mark, though the whole thing was fine. It wasn't bad, but I think it's hardly the stunner people on here think it is. The only thing I disagree with is the inclusion of Noll in the list of performers who gave their characters texture. I didn't like her. But props to Bobby Steggert, who is amazing.

From his 1998 review:
But the show soon turns into a numbing succession of open-throated anthems, songs with titles like 'Wheels of a Dream' and 'Make Them Hear You.'
From this review:
Iām still not bowled over by the full-throated, teary songs about hope and loss and the future that awaits us, with titles like "The Wheels of a Dream" and "Make Them Hear You."
Sounds more and more like that is Brantey's review.

Hollywood Reporter is a rave

Maybe it's some 3rd-rate "critic" wanting to imitate/copy what a "good" review would be, as that critic couldn't make up his opinion without sounding unsophisticated.

If you read the web address for the El Paso review it reads...ReadNYT
That's bad form!

Variety is a rave, with a love letter to Noll.

Posted: 11/15/09 at 7:54pmI don't think that Hollywood Reporter review says enough about the production to consider it a rave. If he were raving, he would go into details about what specifically was so amazing. I know it's splitting hairs, but I would consider this "Very Positive".

Associated Press looks positive, but has minor issues with some of the performances.

Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:04pmSo far it looks like Milcrom-Dodge is really getting noticed for her work. Another triumph for a female director/choreographer on Broadway !!!! Nice !
re: RAGTIME Reviews#39
Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:05pmI'm very happy Steggert is getting these fantastic reviews, even if I can't understand the love for Noll. But so far so good!
re: RAGTIME Reviews#40
Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:07pmAnyone hoping for a rave from Brantley (if that is truly his review) is clearly somewhat delusional. If that is the actual NYT review, I'm content with that. The majority of its criticisms were lobbied at the source material, and not the production.

USA Today 3.5 out of 4 stars.

Not to further split hairs bjh, but any review that says the show "is one of the best musicals of recent decades...reborn in a magnificently stirring production that deserves to run for years," sure counts as a rave to me.
Thrilled with the wonderful reviews. I feel a little bad for Stephanie Umoh for the "she's not Audra McDonald" reviews, though I fully understand. That performance was magical and ten years really isn't that long... I hope there's one reviewer out there who didn't see the original and can give her the fairest shake, even if that person just isn't me.
re: RAGTIME Reviews#45
Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:14pmThat USA Today review sure as hell doesn't read like a 3 1/2 star review.

I'm struggling to understand the criticisms leveled at the score ("hardly A-list"). Slightly repetitive, I'll grant, but I can't imagine not finding beauty in the music and lyrics. I don't really get why any serious musical has to have "Sondheimesque complexity" to be credible.
Then again, I'm pretty biased.

Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:23pmI'm with you Jordan. I thought the same thing when I read it. It feels like a 2 1/2 or 3 star review at best. He totally backhands the writing of the characters and the singing capability of Quentin and Stephanie.

Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:36pmThere's a differenc between repetition and reoccurring musical themes.
re: RAGTIME Reviews#49
Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:38pmYes, I absolutely agree. I find the score near-flawless, personally.
re: RAGTIME Reviews#50
Posted: 11/15/09 at 8:53pmHow the review reads is beside the point, most people will just look at the star count for easy reference.
