I love how this closes but MEMPHIS gets to stay open.

Blame the Nederlanders. Hahaha. Fences will sell more then Ragtime. That's why it's closing. Same thing with Mermaid. It's a business.

Missed the original and it looks like my ticket for Jan. 13 means I'm missing it this time, too!

Any guess on how long it will be until the remainder of the run completely sells out? 12 hours? One day? Perhaps it won't.. it is closing... I hope tickets for the final will still be avalible tomorrow...
This is upsetting. I saw the show for the 2nd time last night.
I have a thought...and a question... If this show was originally planned as a "limited run" and advertised that way, do you think with that approach it could have found a larger audience? Wasn't South Pacific a "limited run" at first, then later changed to an "open run"? I think I would have made the decision to see Ragtime sooner if I thought it were a limited run. Just a thought
South Pacific was originally a limited run because it's being produced by a non-profit company in a subscription house, not being advertised that way as a "marketing approach." It's also a show with a huge reputation, and decades of classic status. Apples and oranges.

Fences is not going to the Neil Simon and is not the reason why Ragtime is closing.
For that matter, whatever show follows Ragtime at the Neil Simon cannot be blamed either for Ragtime's closing.

I had tickets for the 10th, as a Christmas gift. I really wanted to see it. I was too young during the original run, and being a history nerd, I have loved this show since I first heard the OBCR years ago. I was soo looking forward to this!
It's a shame. Best of luck to the cast and crew!
which show will you all incessantly speculate about next?
"- I think a lot of it has to do with the sad fact that success on Broadway is more and more dependent on having a star, especially in this economy."
Sorry, ljay669, can't say I agree with you you. Who are the "stars" that keep Wicked, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, Lion King, Billy Elliot etc. at or near capacity? What big names are drawing people to Memphis or In The Heights?
What a shame. I saw it in DC and it really was a wonderful production. Hopefully the cast and crew will find work soon.
I love how this closes but MEMPHIS gets to stay open.
Well it's not like there's a committee that decides which shows close and which ones don't. Ragtime, with its large cast and orchestra, likely had higher running costs than Memphis and it wasn't making enough money. I haven't seen Memphis, but obviously as long as it continues to meet its weekly nut, it'll stay open.
"Wicked, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, Lion King, Billy Elliot "
- The names of those shows sell tickets. They are household names. Those are blockbuster musicals. Ragtime is not. Do you really think A Little Night Music would be selling out without Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury? Not a chance.
"What big names are drawing people to Memphis or In The Heights?"
- Have you looked at their attendance percentages? Why do you think Heights is bringing in a "name" this Winter?

WICKED, JERSEY BOYS, MAMMA MIA, and THE LION KING all opened at a time when shows did not depend so much on stars in the cast, and by now are tried-and-true crowd pleasers.
I'd also argue that the "stars" of JERSEY BOYS and MAMMA MIA are the songs and the "stars" of THE LION KING and WICKED are the titles.
IN THE HEIGHTS and BILLY ELLIOT are somewhat unusual, but they also have Tonys to their names, which historically helps with sales.
All shows rely on something to sell tickets. Whether it's a star, a known title or property, or an award, it's something. A star just happens to be the easiest and (lately) most foolproof.
The TITLE is the star? So, with a train of thought that defies logic, the argument is that they are hits because they are hits?
What a shame - I got to see the original and LOVED it and was kind of counting on this being around for a while to get to see the revival later in the year.
Damn.
the argument is that they are hits because they are hits?
Well, yes.
Maybe I've been studying the business for too long, but it makes complete sense to me. Obviously they didn't start out that way, but at this point, yes, they are hits because they are hits.
So much retardation in this thread. I love it!
Look, RAGTIME is closing. Say your farewells and move on.
Also, you can't deny that THE LION KING's main selling point is the extremely popular Disney movie with the same title. That's what I mean when I say the title is the star.
"So much retardation in this thread. I love it!

That was extremely offensive, the word retard is not a word to describe something stupid, same thing as the word gay.
And why do you have to be such an ass and debbie downer? What do you like? Because in every thread you are complaining about something or making fun of someone.
I really regret not seeing this show over Thanksgiving break. Tried and lost the lotto 3 times and should have just bought a ticket. UGH. I am currently ashamed to be someone who lists RAGTIME as my favorite musical. How did I not support? Bad fan! Bad, bad fan! In the back of my mind I figured I'd be able to see it over my next trip and now another fine example of what happens when you assume. UGH... no words besides DAMN!
