i saw daphne both off-broadway and on-broadway. i wish she could've been part of this film, really i did. i am a fan. she did some amazing work in rent. i don't know all the reasons behind her not being cast in this movie. some say it was the pregnancy, some say it was because she's heavier than she was during her "rent days", some say it was because she actually photographs much older than the other cast members, some say they wanted a more recognized name in the female lead. don't know the *real* reasons behind it but i can be completely honest and say when i heard rosario was given the role i was abit skeptical and a little saddened that daphne wouldn't be a part of this.
i felt that if the others from the obc were given a shot to re-create their roles she should have been given that chance also. after all she received a tony nomination for her amazing performance.
after all was said and done i warmed up to the fact that rosario may just be the best possible casting choice and after hearing her sing some of "without you" (my all time favorite song from "rent") i was blown away and all my fears were put to rest. she can sing the role and i think she's more than up to the challenge.
anthony's comments about her singing and her total dedication to the project also have me convinced that she will more than do this role justice.
rosario grew up in the east village. her family were squatters who took over part of an abandoned building on the lower east side because her parents didn't want to raise rosario and her siblings in the projects. so she has alot in her real life that she can use to relate to the character of "mimi". i'm sure she's come into contact with alot of real-life "mimis" while growing up there.
i think she will be great in the role.
