Warning Signs: An utter lack of stars. Rosario Dawson and Taye Diggs are the only recognizable names in a cast of nobodies, most of whom are from the original production … which was 10 years ago. Aren't these guys a little old to be playing 20-somethings? Plus, the trailer's musical numbers … um, those performances ain't exactly Broadway-caliber.
Hahahaha... thats funny... I don't think a lack of recognizable names is bad, because people have to start somewhere, and besides- these names aren't recognizable to EVERYONE, but there is a good amount of people who have at least seen their faces(anyone who watches Law and Order, has seen Dazed and Confused, Road Trip, School of Rock, etc etc...). They're the names where a lot of people see them and go "OH HEY I remember that person from ________"
As for the too old thing- its been done, come up with a new insult! They had nutritionists working with them to make them look all young and they haven't aged a huge amount to begin with anyway. Theres a huge amount of stars out there who play ten years younger than they are.
I won't even start on the Wicked comment.

Posted: 11/10/05 at 4:34pmSee, what I love is that they (a) don't sound like they've seen it, (b) sound like those ridiculous "it's a musical, it has to suck!" people and (c) think you should avoid it because it has no stars. Everyone KNOWS that only famous people can act well. *choke*

Good points, emcee. My thoughts exactly.
Aren't you glad you're on the same page with someone who went out in public with THAT hair??

At this point, I'm glad to be on the same page as anyone.

I agree that it sounds like they really don't know anything about it beyond the trailer.
"Aren't these guys a little old to be playing 20-somethings?"
Ever heard of a little blockbuster film called Grease? Like they were really high school teens. Puh-leeze!

"Ever heard of a little blockbuster film called Grease? Like they were really high school teens. Puh-leeze!"
Grease (like Cry-Baby after it) was meant to be campy. Hence, actors in their twenties and thirties played highschoolers just to further exaggerate things. I don't think Rent has the same intention with its casting - not that the person criticizing the OBC's reprisal is necessarily "right."

Wasn't Stockard Channing like 36 when they filmed Grease?
And you're right - not a single "student" in that film was actually high school age.

Posted: 11/10/05 at 5:05pmThat is so horrible. I don't believe anything. I know a few people that don't know one thing about the Broadway version that actually want to see the movie because of the trailer. And also people need to start somewhere. I mean really, it can be a first huge film for someone and launch there hollywood career. I'm not even going ot go by anything this says.

"Didn't EW choose Rent as a must see at one point?"
It had the cast of "Rent" featured as 8 of 125 things to look forward to this year in the June 24-July 1 issue. But this isn't Entertainment Weekly.
It's all a matter of opinion. This film was made for the fans, not the critics.

He mentions that most of the cast were in the original production, than says the singing isn't Broadway calber!

(I'm not giving this site much credence, but figure I'll put in my two cents anyway)
The next Chicago? I think not.
"Not exactly Broadway-caliber"? Um, 'scuse me, but that "unknown" playing Angel won a freakin' TONY for his portrayal in 1996. And Idina won the TONY for her performance in Wicked...
"Unknown"? Nevermind they neglected the tv roles that Jesse has held for some years now, and Taye's stint in "Kevin Hill"...that makes perfect sense, because a movie with all the most popular "it" stars of today will SURELY be a blockbuster, Academy Award winning film, right? (she says as sarcasm drips from her tongue)
I just hope nobody reads that little opinion snippet on that site and decides to miss out on this film because of that. That would be the real shame here.

And what exactly is Broadway caliber? Rent is not typical Broadway music in the sense of an Ethel Merman showtune.

Well I think it's pretty obvious at this point..
that RENT wont be the critical success and financial success like CHICAGO.

You guys have to remember to you these's people are not unknow, but to nearly everyone else, they have no idea who won a Tony in 1996 or who won what for "Wicked".
The thing that gets me is most of the people on this board are going to see this no matter what anyone says, be happy see the movie, take a friend, it would be a very boring place we lived in, if everyone like the same thing.
As long as you like thats all that matters, you guys are acting like it's the end of the world.
Go enjoy and sing to your hearts desire in the cinema.
