I suggest that Dame and MB get a room where you can stroke eachother's "egos" privately.
This has gotten absurd.

MB, I'll give to you that it's a bit absurd to assume that the cast's *only* motive was artistic integrity, but on the same note's flip side, it is also absurd to assume that their love and caring for the work didn't have quite a bit to do with it. Yes, it would've been crazy for them not to do it, and yes, certainly they'd think this would get their names to have more power in the film industry, but come on -- just like the art wasn't their only motive, nor was the money. It's not so clear-cut. I think you can recognize other, less-pedestal-worthy motives without diminishing the existence of the others.
A work of art is an invitation to love.

Penguin - I think here and now we should write Joe Brooks' new musical about penguins!

Well it involves smphonic penguin sounds, played on a kazoo a synthizer set to "squak" and a zither. I'm not sure if that qualifies as "music."

If money wasn't the issue, they would all have been paid scale and that wasn't the case.
And of course, I'm sure they all believe in the message of the film - that's besides the point. None of them would have let the message of RENT get in the way of an extraordinary opportunity.
RENT is the ultimate sell out movie about not selling out. And that is ok! That's not a bad thing! Seriously, when I read about how people are sick to their stomachs reading this thread, I think that its simply a matter of reality interfering with romantic ideals about this subject.

You really need to get over yourself.
What is sickening about this thread is not anyone's opinions about the film but your disgusting revelry in its outcome.

In the ice and in the son
Black and white march on and on
Little creatures in tuxedos
Waddling as is their credo
But one day they'll arrive at their destiny
And a mayor will decree
That life is only the march of penguins
Shining like a diva's sequins
It brings us up and gives us hope
That we can get through without dope
And when we reach our journey's end
Someone will call us their freind
Because life is only the march of penguins
Black and white march on and on

Waddling as is their credo

DAME, you can't deny that there's been obvious rejoicing in light of the lack of nominations. You have your opinions, we have ours, I'm not going to go there again, but don't play dumb blatantly deny what's been said. There are posts here that are in revelry if I ever saw any -- outright happiness about the lack of nominations. There's a difference between holding an opinion and actually being happy about the failure of something you dislike, and furthermore, rubbing that happiness in the faces of others.
A work of art is an invitation to love.

Colleen's sudden illness is HIGH camp.
I almost want to take a skillet and 'tap' her on the head with it just to see her eyes spin around while she clutches her stomach.

>>>What revelry? He has a different opinion than yours and he is arguing his point...and winning big time.
First of all, who is to say his opinion is different than mine? Is this film everything it could have been? No, it was flawed in some major ways. I definitely do not think this was a high quality piece of cinema and disagree with many (if not a majority) of Chris' directorial decisions.
However, this thread has long surpassed any sort of respectful discussion about the art and has essentially become an attempt to celebrate what you are choosing to deem as a failure.
No matter how you cut it, that is completely despicable.
