I find it interesting that people here are criticizing the man for taking an interest in what is said about both himself and the film...we criticize performers for not engaging fans, ignoring them, not signing autographs, etc....yet when a performer does take the time to interact with fans, we criticize him for that as well...what a no-win scenario. Seemingly, some individuals are just bound and determinded to be miserable...
There is only one you for all time. Fearlessly be yourself. Anthony Rapp
My avatar- the amazingly talented Michael Buble
MB - Did you read what Anthony said? He can tell the difference between a genuine warm reception of a film and fake politeness. He said he has Academy people SEPCIFICALLY seek him out to praise the film. Nobody does that if they don't truely like a film. And the fact that you have a problem with Anthonys continuing work with RENT just baffles me. It obviously is a major part of his life and touched him, as it did many of us. Your posts are just rude.
Not because people liked or didn't like the film, or that the film didn't get any GG nods. But, I am truly disgusted by the complete lack of respect shown by certain individuals on this thread.
I have especially noticed certain individuals who seem to be trying to, for lack of a better word, elevate themelves are acting the most childish of all. You're coming off as spiteful and honestly highly inappropriate.
The fact that any person ever could have enough disdain for a film, or any piece of art for that matter, to brood over it in this manner is slightly disturbing. You're all very intelligent individuals, your time and energies would be much better spent on something you consider to be positive and not trying to discredit and downright belittle those who find themselves in disagreement with you.
I am sad to say that I have lost a lot of respect for some posters this evening.
"You just can't win. Ever. Look at the bright side, at least you are not stuck in First Wives Club: The Musical. That would really suck. "

In some ways, what goes on in situations like this make me worry that the book is also going to be dimissed as some self-pride-related, PR ploy. Which it's not.
DAME, no, nobody was talking about him until he posted, but he has just as much a right as anyone else to talk about the movie as anybody else. Being involved in the film shouldn't mean that he has to be called upon in order to be allowed to participate in a discussion, or has any less right to jump in as he pleases. The implication in your comment is a little far-fetched.
I think it's despicable for someone to bask in the fact that RENT didn't get any GG nods. That's just sad that you get your pleasure from other people's disappointments.
By the way Dame, I'm not a kid. It's rather immature of you to assume the people defending this movie/Anthony are kids. People can have valid opinons that you don't agree with. I work with kids for a living, and some of them surpass you in the maturity department.
MB wrote (way way back): "But the lack of GG love for the film is admittedly slightly refreshing to those of us who feel the entire project has been surrounded in slightly delusional posturing by its fans and even some of its cast members on this board.
Most people think the film is bad. Poorly made. A missed opportunity. However you want to phrase that. And its fairly absurd for complaining about its lack of film awards.
That said, there is nothing wrong with liking it the movie. There are plenty of horrible movies that I love (BEACHES). But it's time to call a spade a spade."
I agree that what you said was perfeclty acceptable, it is very easy though to take the part about delusion, as greater than just being about the prospects of the film. The use of the term delusion is so negative and implies such a lack of respect for the opinions of the people who may like it that it makes it hard to get to the true meaning of what you posted.
They wanted the film to be a huge success, and some were very offensive and idiotic about the way they expressed that. At the time it anything was possible, and some take "insider industry" talk just as negatively as a person who is part of a show. There is an inherent distrust by some to a statement that tries to say "my opinion is better" (yes just like the one that comes when it is "well I was in the show, I know best." I am not saying I have a problem with them, but there is a stigma to both.
The people that continue to say the film is a financial success, or deserves awards, I can't say I disagree about them. And I am just as frustrated as either of you with people saying the movie is "the greatest thing ever, for everyone," those people are really making most of your points VERY valid.
It still stands, the perception that "everyone who liked the film is misguided" (I know you didn't say it, it is a inference many make) is hurtful. As are the ridiculous attacks on people who didn't like the movie, or the actors in it.
rent_nodaybuttoday, I said no such thing. I just stated what happened.
EverythingIsRENT:
You said "He said he has Academy people SEPCIFICALLY seek him out to praise the film. Nobody does that if they don't truely like a film."
Sweetheart.. are you that naive? Let me tell you something about hollywood screenings. Everyone gets to see the movie for free. Alot of the times there is food. When the cast is present you would not believe the amount of kissing ass that goes on during the Q & A's and during the receptions. Everyone here kisses ass.It doesn't mean they liked the film. That's just the way it is. And everyone that goes to these things either as a guest or as a audience member knows it.
Oh no, the book won't be dismissed as a PR ploy. It will be dismissed because very few people really care about books. My God... Courtney Love's mother couldn't get much publicity publishing a book about what a bitch her daughter is!
My post wound up something like a page and a half from where the post that inspired it was.
I was trying to explain the logic behind some people thinking fans of the movie had been called "delusional," which was the point that I took issue with throughout the thread. I see MB's point that he never actually said it, it was a perception issue on my part.
What is a BOOK? I have never heard of such a thing.
And even if they don't ignore it simply because it's a book, some of this all still goes to show that it may not be a surprise for people to go "oh, he just wants people to see that he's so great because he overcame so much sh*t. He's just tooting his own horn." I think people who think that will do so in bitterness, naivete, and unwillingness to put aside a lot of predisposal and just take honesty and good intention for what it's worth, but be that as it may. It's a risk taken.
oh my god, don't ever call my sweetheart again. Dissagree with me, but don't friggin patronize me.
The point is, that academy person had NO REASON to come up to Anthony at all. None. If he was indifferent or even hated the film, he could have very easily went along his way without coming into contact with Anthony at all. Doesn't that say something to you? I have no idea why you continue in this discussion if you hated the film. What are you geting out of this? Bizzare.
defying_gravity2, I am sorry I offended you. I was mislead by the Idina avatar and your name. Sort of like if I saw a Avatar with a Barbie and a name like BarbielovesKen. I would incorrectly assume the poster was 12. A honest mistake.
