Posted: 8/21/09 at 2:04amI guess Riedel isn't aware that Forum, Company, and Into the Woods all turned profits (in regards to him saying that Night Music was the only Sondheim show to recoup in its original production).

Zeta-Jones is an absolutely thrilling choice for Desiree. She almost did the Kathleen Marshall-shepherded revival of ANYTHING GOES that Roundabout was planning a few years ago until she decided Reno Sweeney was too demanding a part for her first foray to the stage in quite some time. This is much more ideally suited for her.
I'm glad the producers were able to line up a big enough name to keep Lansbury on board, which was the real reason the talk of Waddingham coming over went out the window a few weeks ago.
Considering the rest of the cast is just as golden, this is shaping up to be one hell of a production.

Posted: 8/21/09 at 2:24amSounds good to me, now I actually wish that Chita would play Madame Armfeldt... it is a shame though that there wont be a lot of dancing or singing for Zeta-Jones.

Posted: 8/21/09 at 2:35amIf she's successful in this, Sondheim might pursue her for the Follies film. It will take at least another five years to get that project ready and filming, and by then Zeta-Jones will be the perfect age for Phyllis.

Posted: 8/21/09 at 2:36amI am just hoping Zeta will be able to play vulnerable enough for CLOWNS.

Posted: 8/21/09 at 3:28amI don't understand. Everyone was dismissing Hannah Waddingham because there were American actresses who could do the role equally well but now everyone is pleased because CZJ has got it?!

So no uproar over two British stars headlining the long-awaited first Broadway revival of a beloved show? What happened to the argument over Hannah Waddingham, and that there were American actors just as capabale of performing the role?
Such patriotism you Broadway folk have :)
