If Brantley had raved about it, he would have been redeemed as a genius by now.
I never really got the hate for Ben Brantley. I actually think he quite a good theatre critic. Everybody has their own opinions, so you can't bash somebody for that, but all of his opinions have a reason and are well thought out.
With stratospheric prices, people more and more rely on them instead of making up their own minds
The reviews were unnecessarily brutal. Hopefully it can build an audience.
Another quality show bit the dust earlier this season but deserved a better fate. I refer to Big Fish.
I cannot use Brantley and genius in the same sentence.

But people don't read anymore. Word of mouth is how people make up their minds.

Of course people will see it. It will be seen regularly on TDF and TKTS.
Not by me Blaxx Ive said many times on here over the years that he just angers me, his reviews seem more about him thinking he's witty and funny than actually reviewing the show.
For those old enough to remember, old Ben has a touch of Stewart Klein Foot in Mouth disease.

Very recently, I was listening to a Broadway actress on Sirius XM on Broadway. It may have been Karen Ziemba. Anyway, this person was mentioning how sad that some shows suffer because certain influential critics have too much influence. She noted that there are too many out there who actually don't go to a show, because of what one critic or another says about a show. I say that is you're curious about Rocky, go see it and make up your own mind.

"I say that is you're curious about Rocky, go see it and make up your own mind."
That's certainly been my plan from the get-go.
These reviews may just sink the show. It has not been performing all that well the past few weeks in terms of gross. With great marketing (and I mean GREAT) they may turn it around. But without that, and a few big TONY noms, I don't see it lasting too long.
This is a textbook case of how many people on this board get so incredibly passionate about a show, they can't possibly believe that someone could have a different view and opinion of the show than they do and if they do, they are not only wrong but idiots not fit for continued existence.
Oh well, I'll reserve judgment until I hear what Andrew Andrew have to say about it.
Mattbrain...good for you. The show will need you (and more like you) to help make
Rocky a success.
Without Wildhorne the critics got antsy not being able to massacre a show and poor Rocky happened to be walking down the street and .......
Can't see how anyone here is suprised by the reviews. They pretty much reflect what posters have said: some hated it, some liked it, some loved it. How did anyoone think the reviews would be raves?
I don't know if there is any way to know how much the reviews affect how this will fare in the long haul. When there is a HUGE uptick in sales in th next few days after any review, we hear about it -- otherwise? We just have to wait. IF I was a betting woman, I'd agree with the above poster that gave it "a year". Me, too.
One wonders re old Benny. Will he give a good review to Les Miz?
Wink Wink. Nudge Nudge

You just did.
:)
Don't know where else to put this question-so-most on here and critics seem negative about the music. Rocky has played in Germany so it's not a new piece. Does the director/producer actually listen to [outside] critisism[?] and would they not change what doesn't seem to be working?[I do realise a lot does change during dress rehersals]. Is everyone so involved that they can't step outside and focus on reality. I've watched rehersals and seen cast members cheer and holler for their friends so honesty becomes lost in encouragement. Suppose I'm trying to say, if it is[obviously] so bad, why isn't/wasn't/can't it be changed-even after the show opens. Is there a rule that says a performance can't be changed after it opens or 'frozen'? [new word for me].
For your info it is quite good. If you wish to believe a few misguided hacks be my guest. It is your loss./
As someone mentioned above somewhere, if you have an interest in seeing something (not just Rocky, but anything), do it! Form your own opinions, don't let what anyone else says defer you from seeing something because you want to see it.

Right. Only the critics think it sucks. Everyone else loved it.
