Just for the record; @bettybuckley I love you, I also love broadway, I am a huge broadway fan. There are tons of broadway stars that are dear friends of mine. I have the upmost respect for all broadway actors and singers. To me the greatest thing in life is a true thespian. One who can be a great actor, singer, and great dancer. The all around performer. Last I checked, America is land of the free, home of the brave, and freedom of speech is still allowed. But what I was merely saying to the singer, or any singer who wishes to be in popular music is that you have to be able to have control of your vibrato and have amazing talent. A lot of people who sing broadway, do not have control of their vibrato, which does not easily lend itself to singing other styles of music. The wide open vibrato doesn't work everywhere. Was not dissing anyone, and if you know our show carefully, we have been using the words “Too Broadway” for 11 seasons now, and we have all said it. FYI: If you are a fan of the show, then you would know, we had a giant win with a broadway singer named Adam Lambert. One of our greatest contestants, 4 years ago, And yo Betty the dawg ain’t got nothing but love for you. Ever since eight is enough. I want everyone to realize their dreams.

Thanks so much for your response, Randy. You're a gentleman, to do so. I left a note on Twitter. Respectfully, of late & accumulatively, the "too Broadway" catch phrase has become a tag for singers you just don't like. Glad to know you love the art form of Musical Theatre. Sure wish you'd just say "that's not the voice for me" or something along those lines. In fact lots of Pop/ Rock starts use vibrato with abandon. I understand what you're saying. I'm suggesting that a lot of young people do not. Wishing you always all the very best & thanks again for your response.

Posted: 2/9/12 at 6:43pmI don't watch Idol anymore, and I don't really have much respect for Randy's opinion even from when I did watch, and this all seems kinda silly. Yet, I'm glad Betty didn't back down fully the way some would, because this "uncontrollable" vibrato thing Randy talks about seems to exist as much in any form of singing.

A lot of people who sing broadway, do not have control of their vibrato
You mean, they have perfect control of it?
Still, the poor individual cares to capitalize America, but doesn't care to do so with Broadway.
Fail.

Posted: 2/9/12 at 7:50pmTo me, Randy's response really shows how little he knows about Broadway as a whole. He mentioned Adam Lambert, who while a huge POP star has never been in a Broadway show in his life, yet failed to mention Idol alum who have been genuinely successful in the genre, like Constantine Maroulis (a Tony nominee, no less), Clay Aiken and Diana DeGarmo. Even Ace Young has had more Broadway success than Mr. Lambert. Idiot.

Lambert did Wicked on tour or in LA or something--not quite the same but... (he may have gone to school for it too).
I love how he said he loved thespians though
Not just because it sounds funny coming from him, but because that really echnically means more actors thn Broadway musical performers...

"Lambert did Wicked on tour or in LA or something--not quite the same but... (he may have gone to school for it too)."
Yeah, I know Adam has done musicals. My point is that he's never been an actual Broadway performer, yet he was the one Randy singled out as a "Broadway singer." As far as schooling...I don't think he's had any formal training. At least not in musical theater.

Not knowing your show, um, carefully, is only a negative in your world, dawg.

And I have the upmost respect for the ignorant.

Posted: 2/10/12 at 12:57amCan we please end the "last time I checked, this is a country with freedom of speech" garbage that gets pulled out every time somebody is criticized? It's become really tiresome how many people equate freedom of speech with freedom from criticism of their speech.

Man, those Broadway singers and their uncontrollable vibrato!
Hold on, did he just make a dig at Betty? I mean, her vibrato is pretty distinct...
Randy is ignorant and clueless. Always has been. I thought even Paula had better insight than he did. At least she used terminology she didn't understand quite sparingly. I never found any of his critiques intelligible.

Posted: 2/10/12 at 8:26amWell, he likes to talk about vibrato being a "Broadway" thing and that "Broadway" performers don't generally know how to control it. That is the STUPIDEST thing I've ever hear. I can't begin to enumerate the number of Broadway performers I've HEARD control their vibrato in 11 o'clock numbers and SAVE it for effect (Sutton Foster is a MASTER of this). Generally, Idol contestants and MANY pop/rock singers have NO vibrato or NO CONTROL of it because they have NO TRAINING. What an idiot Randy is! Kudos to Betty for bringing up the subject and GRACIOUSLY accepting Randy's apology without completely throwing in the towel!

Posted: 2/10/12 at 8:35am1000 times yes to Calvin's comment! It's so annoying when ignorant people actually pull the 'we have freedom of speech' line to mean 'stop making me explain or defend my speech!'

Agreed. It seems so lame to use the "freedom of speech" excuse when a person seems to be questioning the other writer's freedom of speech in disagreeing with him.
"Too Broadway" is just such an ignorant and meaningless generality -- like saying a person sounds "too Black" or "too young" as if all Blacks sound alike or all people sound like their age.

I;m at a loss, isn't singing with vibrato a technique that you need to leard to do it properly, and singing with out it natural?
I dont know anyone who speaks with vibrato (except maybe Liza)

Lord, he's an idiot. And an idiot who hasn't even accomplished anything interesting (on his own, rather than as part of a team, where his contribution can't be specified).
Why anyone listens to him is a mystery.
But I would say the same of Donald Trump and many others over whom the herd fawns.

It's interesting to read about what vibrato is: A straight tone is considered a "damaging circumstance that's unhealthy to the voice."
http://www.voiceteacher.com/vibrato.html
From what I read, the ability to utilize it properly is based off proper training.
Most of the situations where Randy has gone off on singers on Idol were where they had a properly trained voice, and he was preferring a straight tone, which is damaging to the voice.

Posted: 2/10/12 at 12:39pmVibrato is actually a sign of healthy vocal technique. It's not about learning how to utilize vibrato as it is learning how to properly support your voice, at which point vibrato should come naturally. From there, you learn how to manipulate the quality of it. Some people start out already having a tendency to have vibrato in their voice without training, some people don't. But proper vibrato means you're singing in a healthy way. To say that Broadway singers, who are far more likely to have extensive vocal training than rock or pop performers, can't control their vibrato is ridiculous.

I have no idea why they elected to keep him on when Simon left and they decided to revamp the panel. He has never contributed any useful or intellegent criticism. He's such a moron.

I have not watched that show in years, but it would always drive me crazy when he would critique performers and use certain terms that did not equate to what the singer was doing, etc. He would refer to flat as being sharp, vice versa. He would talk about a woman's "falsetto"...he's just an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about.
I could also list several pop "singers," who are out of control with their vibratto. He's just a moron...
