"no its a poor very poor season I will wait when a good season come"

That's the thing, it has been an extraordinary season full of great performances. Don't let these terrible choices influence you.

Aladdin over Bridges of Madison County for Best Musical
Big Fish not receiving a nomination for Best Scenic Design of a Musical
Norbert Leo Butz and Steven Pasquale being left out of the acting categories
Best Direction of a Musical category - the whole thing

WTF?

I do detest the commonplace of calling these snubs, though. Every performance (except Alan Cumming's) was considered in advance of the nominations, and the people nominated were ranked higher than the others. It always seems rude to the nominees to suggest who really should be there, as though they don't deserve to be.

And I say this as a Bridges/Pasquale fan, heh.

That Time article has several errors in it.

"The front-runner, by default, is A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, the enjoyably frivolous adaptation of Alec Guinness’ film Kind Hearts and Coronets, which leads the field with 10 nominations. Its competition includes one pastiche of jazz-era song-and-dance numbers, After Midnight..."

Gentleman's Guide is NOT based on the film, but only on the novel by Roy Horniman; After Midnight does not contain pastiche jazz-era songs, but rather actual jazz-era songs.

Hard to take anything the author says seriously when he can't get his facts straight!

"Gentleman's Guide is NOT based on the film, but only on the novel by Roy Horniman..."

Actually, having now read the ($4.99 on Kindle) novel, the musical has many elements from both the book and the movie.

Yeah, I don't agree with the whole snubbing thing either. But damn, man.

More WTF thoughts:

Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Zachary Quinto not getting nominations.
Of Mice and Men being shut out of Best Revival of a Play
Michael Cumpsty (Machinal) and Rafe Spall (Betrayal) being left out of Featured Actor in a Play.
Bartlett Sher getting no love for Director of a Musical.

Wait, did anyone think Rafe Spall was gonna get in?

Considering that there are few (if any) mind-boggling "how did they get nominated?" puzzlers, there are few (if any) snubs to my mind. A snub implies someone undeserving got in when someone deserving was left out. NOT when someone deserving was beaten by someone also deserving.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

That may be true, newintown, but officially only the novel is given credit as source material. Someone can step in here, but I believe there was a lawsuit of some kind that it only had the rights to the novel and not the film.

^ That is correct, Whizzer. I remember reading an article awhile back (which can’t locate now) that discussed the lawsuit and implied that the creatives had started out using the film as inspiration before finding out they couldn’t get the rights, so while they claim G’s GUIDE to be an adaptation of “Israel Rank,” that's a retrofitted description of the show’s genesis.

"Considering that there are few (if any) mind-boggling "how did they get nominated?" puzzlers, there are few (if any) snubs to my mind."

For me, Tony Shalhoub's amusing but gimmicky performance as George S. Kaufman in ACT ONE was a real "how the hell did he get nominated?" puzzler.

Basically for ACT ONE to have gotten any nominations at all is in the WTF category. God what a waste of time that whole enterprise was.

Beautyandwickedlover:

I agree with you about jonathan freeman having mastered the role of Jafar and it was sad he didn't get some love , and he's played him for over 20 years. On the other hand awards or not , he's a fantastic performer who's consistently turned in exceptionally funny stage performances over the years, to say nothing of his voice. Have you seen him as roger debris or grimsby? He's an old pro who is always a joy to watch and listen to. And as for Jafar , jonathan freeman embodies Jafar perfectly - being flawlessly familiar with and expertly conveying Jafar's every idiosyncracy. Amazing.

Big Fish got completely snubbed. NLB should have been nominated. And the show should've been nominated for best scenic design and best costume design.

Bridges was totally robbed.

No best musical..no best director...no Steven Pasquale. Shocking.

First of all, congratulations to all the nominees! This year has been awesome, there are so many great shows and I wish I could see everything!
On the other hand, I am heartbroken about Bridges of Madison County... It is such a beautiful show, and the performances are stellar. And now because it did not get a nod for best musical, it might not find the audience that it deserves... I also really hoped that Steven Pasquale would get nominated. Don't get me wrong, I think all the nominees are great and deserve to be nominated (I had the privilege of seeing Neil Patrick Harris, Jefferson Mays, and Bryce Pinkham, and loved all their performances. Hoping to see Ramin Karimloo and Andy Karl soon). But Steven Pasquale's performance really moved me, and I thought he was nothing short of magnificent. All in all, the acting categories are so competitive this year, I would have been torn either way. I'm glad Kelli was nominated and that Bridges' score was recognized though, that score is something else!

Thank you. It sucks that the show will barely be remembered or honored for anything. The sets and costumes were extraordinary, and definitely some of the best of the season. That show was moving and beautiful. BOO.

Yes, Bridges wasn't totally robbed but it should have gotten four additional nominations. BOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Christopher Isherwood is delusional. When I saw the Realistic Jones, half the audience was asleep. The highlight was the dead squirrel. At the end, people were yelling "what the hell did I just see?? what the heck was that?" I do not think the Realistic Jones IMHO is a good play unless you want a play to put the audience to sleep. Comparing it to Seinfeld insults the sitcom. While Seinfeld was about the comedy of minutia of every day life, Jones was literally about nothing. Thank you Tony Committee for realizing that Realistic Jones was a snoozer. And that Isherwood was the Emperor in the Emperor's new Clothes. Great actors can not bring a bad play to life.

As for the best musical nominees-- I think they got it right. Bullets was a brilliant movie made into a mediocre mundane musical with a horrific ending. Let's all sing "Yes we Have no Bananas" and maybe no one will realize yes we have no ending.

Susan Stroman's work is starting to look all alike. Can't believe they even gave Woody a nod for that book! What a missed opportunity. The cast is talented and works so hard ( I liked Marin Mazie and Helene York and others) but Woody and Stro did not help them. So glad they left it out.

Bridges, after hearing the c.d, has a gorgeous score. I can't stop listening to it. But in the theatre, it was a musical soap opera. With kind of melodic but listless music.

Plotwise-- Not much happens. "I love you I love you I'm Married, I'm leaving. No I'm not." It wasn't a satisfying musical. In spite of a gorgeous score, I don't think this material should ever have become a musical.

Rocky is long on spectacle and very faithful to the movie. I had a good time but the composers Flahrety (sp?) and Ahrens forgot to write a good score. I enjoyed it fine but it just wasn't a great musical. It didn't improve on the movie. At least it didn't make the musical worse than the movie. It just reminded me of the movie. I loved the spectacle of the fight at the end. I liked it fine... just not a great musical. Andy Karl was great. Glad he got a nomination.

I went to Beautiful kicking and screaming. Another Juke Box Musical??
Didn't want to go but i was charmed by the show, the music, Jessie Mueller, the cast.
I found Carole King's husbands inability to commit something that many people can relate to. A very enjoyable evening and a well deserved nomination of the show, Jessie M and others. Most enjoyable musical of the season in my opinion.

Liked Gentleman's Guide but did not love it. It was cute, fluffy and quirky.

I haven't seen If Then but it looks pretentious. And speaking of bad marketing why does the poster look like a Tampon Commercial? What I've heard of the music isn't interesting.

I did sit through Big Fish and Norbert already stole a Tony for Catch Me If you Can over other deserving winners so I'm okay with that.

We had a great season of musicals planned and boy did a lot of people miss the boat.

Really shocked about Mazzie being snubbed, especially as one of Gentleman's Guide ladies got a nod. Don't get me wrong, those actresses were good - but dear God, if I had to hear, "Oh, Moooonty!" trilled one more time I was gonna run screaming from the theater. So SO grating. And NML/Godot getting nothing - wow. WOW. Those were fantastic performances.

I guess if I was to rant about anything else, it would be that Daniel Radcliffe has gotten no love from the Tony Awards. He has grown as an actor for more than a decade. I've also been a fan of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen for many years and it would've been great to see them get some recognition as well.
