Saw Rocky tonight. My thoughts
Scenic design blew away Bullets and Beautiful (which I thought was fabulous)
Andy Karl May not win against NPH or Mays but he works his ass off and shows a great range. His voice sounded awesome tonight. What a credit to his craft and I am glad he got the recognition from the nomination
Margo Seibert was really strong. A little disappointed in her not getting a nomination. Keep an eye on her!
Best Musical? I'm sorry but I get why not. BUT it is a great show as a spectacle and really grabbed you. I found myself standing and screaming like an idiot during the final 20 minutes. And I got a little misty too (ugh. I hate myself. Time for a martini)
Someone from Jersey Boys gave Andy flowers during curtain call (which he threw to Orfeh ). Andy seemed really pumped. It was a good night. But I hate myself for getting misty. Really. Ick Can you drink away shame?)

When a case gets dismissed, like that one, the case is closed. He is free and clear from those charges forever. It's clear that this private family matter didn't affect sales drastically so...why talk about it now?
theatregeek6, you can drink ANYTHING away.

That's unfortunate about Daniel Radcliffe, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. Daniel Radcliffe can dance, I saw that clip of the H2$ revival, and he distinguished himself from Matthew Broderick's performance. What did he do in Cripple of Inishmaan that appealed to you? And how were Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in No Man's Land?
Sadly haterobics, there is no statute of limitations on public opinion... which is the only thing that really matters regarding PR and specifically the PR of this show as it gears up for the Tonys (which I think was the point of this original sub-topic). People form and hold on to their opinions (right or wrong) and unless something comes out to 100% refute the claims the whole thing stays sullied in the minds of consumers. Not saying it's right, just how it is.
Sutton Ross, how do you know that it hasn't affected sales? We have no idea what the show may have done if that scandal never came to light. As far as I know they aren't sold out every night so we can't 100% say the scandal absolutely didn't affect their bottom line.
That's true, but its not a miserable failure, as some predicted it would be due to the "scandal"
I really want John Travolta to present Best Actress in a Musical. :-P
True. Personally, I always wished the best for the show. It is one of my favorite of his films.

fun facts: Mark Rylance is the fifth performer to get 2 acting nominations in the same year. Amanda Plummer (82), Dana Ivey (84), Kate Burton (02) and Jan Maxwell (10) did before, he's the first man.
Also, Audra (94-14) joins Boyd Gaines (89-07), Raul Esparza (04-09), Angela Lansbury (66-10) and Jan Maxwell (05-12) as the fifth perfomer to get nominations in all four acting categories. It's funny thought, that only A Raisin' in the Sun didn't have any singing in Audra's nominations/wins.
Wait. How did I miss that Hugh Jackman is hosting the 2014 awards?
That makes me happy.
I was at BRIDGES tonight, and was really taken by it. The ending brought me to tears, and I was moved throughout most of the show. Jason Robert Brown was conducting, and you could see how truly passionate he is about this work.
Kelli O'Hara was simply radiant, and this was the absolute best that I have ever seen her. My only complaint is that her accent often resembles an Irish accent, instead of Italian. What a performance, I would really love to see her win her first Tony for this.
Steven Pasquale was completely robbed today. He is a charming leading man, and it is an absolute pleasure to hear a strong baritone role in modern musical theater. "It All Fades Away" received probably the biggest reception of the evening, likely do to his snub, but it was certainly deserved. He also received very enthusiastic entrance applause. Also, "One Second/A Million Miles" must be one of the best new duets that I have seen/heard in years. The power of their chemistry and voices was rapturous.
I am truly shocked that this musical isn't catching on with audiences, and did not catch on with the Tony nomination committee. I would love to see it again before it closes. Like the underrated WOMEN ON THE VERGE, I think BRIDGES is a score that will continue to gain attention and respect, well after the show closes.

^ljay, I saw Bridges last month and "It All Fades Away" definitely got the biggest round of applause then as well. Its a true highlight in an undeniably gorgeous score!
And yet, when was the last time a show like Bridges had a successful Broadway run?
Kudos to them for taking the risk, but I never saw it catching up from the beginning. It is not the time for a show with those qualities to make it.

Not sure what you mean by "like Bridges," but Once is a simple love story without a lot else?

What were these knuckleheads thinking? Rocky was one of the best musicals that I've seen in a while. If I could on recommend one musical for my friends and family to see this year, Rocky would be it. It's ridiculous that they chose not to nominate it as Best Musical.
In addition, they completely blew by not nominating Michelle Williams.
So this thread in a nutshell:
A great many people ranting about nominations that a great many others on this same thread (or if you prefer, site; both are appropriate) reaffirm their approval of while at the same time ranting that other shows didn't get nominations that others on this thread (see above) reaffirm their distaste for in a season where the critics were, with a few exceptions, markedly divided about the merits of just about every show that opened (to the point where even facts were misreported and many wondered if the body of reviewers actually saw the same show they were supposedly reviewing), where it was clear that there were way too many well received performances in key categories to please everyone with a top five list, and which if one reviews the bww threads about just about anything one can readily discover that people genuinely and at times dramatically disagreed about the relative merits of just about everything.
In other words, no matter what yesterday's nominations might have been, there would be rants.

I suppose an argument could be made for The Light in the Piazza - but I already feel that Bridges is the K-Mart/Hallmark version of Piazza; double the schmaltz, 1% of the thought.

You misspelled site as thread, FYI.
I was pissed last year when Alan Cumming didn't get nominated. This year with no Michelle Williams and the idiocy of Cabaret not getting a best revival nod, I am just bored.
Audra was a miracle and as always I wish her all the best, but otherwise I'm indifferent this year.

Denzel Washington is one of the finest actors around and I would have liked to have seen him get a nomination too.
It seems slightly humorous that the people most often deemed to be "snubbed" are TV and film people. Last year the biggest complaints were Alan Cumming and Bette Midler, this year it's Zachary Quinto, Denzel, and Radclifee. I'm sure that is just a strange coincidence?

Bridges has an original score (so there is no existing fan base for the music), has no big movie or TV star to draw an audience, and is based on a hyper-romantic, some would say treacly, novel. Given all of that, for the show to succeed, it needed to be great, and, as much as I love the score, O'Hara and Pasquale, Bridges simply isn't. If the show had been better, had gotten absolute raves from the critics (like Matilda or Book or Mormon) and had received gobs of Tony nominations, we wouldn't be having a discussion about closing notices.
IMHO, the concept behind Bridges isn't necessarily flawed, but that concept leaves you with very little margin for error in the execution. By comparison, for example, Beautiful received reviews similar to Bridges, but Beautiful is able to draw from an existing fan base for Carole King's iconic songs.

NPH will win because the Voters love to reward those who have done work or them (hint: hosted the awards many times).

Please, check out out the 2010 list of Tony winners, the year they gave half the acting awards Hollywood stars just to give the show a boost. Yuck.

100% agree. Hedwig is very deserving of some the nominations it received, but I don't think there would be 8 without him being loved by them.
