Just wanted to get the word out that two rare Grease recordings have just been posted on YouTube. One is an audio of the original 1972 Broadway production, and the other is an audio of the 2011 Chicago revival (which never had an official recording released, despite having several unique songs and scenes). More information is available in the respective video descriptions.
The 2011 production wasn’t a revival of the 1972 Broadway version but a revival of the original 1971 Kingston Mines production, which was literally an entirely different show. It was crude, raw, and graphic. The version that opened on Broadway was softened up quite a bit though it still had a little grit compared to the Hollywood-ized 1978 film adaptation.
That 2011 production wasn't actually a revival of the original Kingston production. It was a hybrid. The audio quality isn't great, and with the unfamiliar songs, it's often difficult to decipher the lyrics. Still, glad it exists. It's closer to the original than we've gotten so far.
The original 1971 Chicago production had additional songs cut for Broadway, plus there was no “Summer Nights”, “Born to Hand Jive”, “All Choked Up”, etc that were written for the Off-Broadway/Broadway incarnation.
