Hey, everyone. We are making our way back to Broadway for the first time since March 2022 in March 2024. Looking for recommendations for my partner, my mom and I. My mom is a little more conservative. We have tickets for Days of Wine and Roses, which I imagine is more like an R rating. I'm looking for PG-13 type shows for the others.
We are likely going to see Merrily as well.

What have you already seen?
I recommend & Juliet to most anyone for a fun show.
You may also want to increase your Sondheim intake by catching Sweeney Todd.

I suggest A Beautiful Noise (it's a huge hit with older crowd) and Water for Elephants. Maybe Harmony can be a good choice too, I absolutely loved this musical. &Juliet is not a good choice for anyone conservative and of old age.

Recently saw "Kimberly Akimbo" and my wife and I loved it! Not sure if that would be up something you mother might enjoy but it is an excellent show.

I second Water For Elephants. It will hopefully will be a good show for a wide cross section of folks who don't want to see a jukebox show.
We saw Water for Elephants in Atlanta. It was a cool production but not very memorable.

We have seen quite a bit, but from what is currently on Broadway: Wicked, Book of Mormon, Aladdin, Chicago, Hadestown, Hamilton, The Lion King, Spamalot (OBC), Sweeney Todd (and it's not my partner's favorite). We are also open to plays and have seen Appropriate.
I second "A Beautiful Noise:..." and "Kimberly Akimbo". Some swearing in Akimbo but it is very PG. For me, it is the best and most heartwarming show on Broadway right now.
A beautiful show, THE NOTEBOOK is my recommendation.
Three ladies play the female lead, and 3 men play the male lead.
Shared love, years ago and in the future.
I recommend Harmony. Perfect for this demographic. Kimberly Akimbo and Juliet are the worst choices for someone who is conservative. Some users on this site are brainless evidently.

Re Merrily. I thought the revival was outstanding and would strongly recommended it, but the thing that currently discourages many people is the sky-high ticket prices. Ticket availability and prices are a lot more sane in 2024, as of now anyway. The revival is currently scheduled to close shortly after your visit, although most people are expecting another extension into June or July.
I have no idea and would keep an eye on news and the dates you’re looking at on the Merrily website. If it closes in late March, prices for your weekend would probably go up a fair amount. If it extends, you should be fine. If possible, I would see it Wednesday night (if you have arrived by then) or Thursday night just to save some money.

First, I recommended "Kimberly Akimbo" because I saw it and thought it was excellent. I mentioned in my post that I was not sure if the OP mother would enjoy it, so I gave recommendation with some reservation. That means OP should do some research on show if it might be an option. Second, just because you are more conservative does not mean you can't enjoy a show with some cursing or content that is different to your values. Finally, your "brainless" comment is quite rude.

Harmony and Merrily are both great.
WARNING: Merrily has increased ticket prices to $899...
Didn't mean to be rude or hurt your feelings, but if you ask me you want to see a show but can't see anything related to Germany and I tell you to go to see Harmony, then you and spend money and time and you'd be like "this guy has to be kidding me"?

I will try once again. I said it was an excellent show but pointed out that maybe it might not be something this slightly conservative person would like. Feel free to check my original post on this thread. If somebody gave me that advice, I would check into the show and see if it might be something I would be willing to pay to see and enjoy. You were being rude by your choice of the word "brainless". All you had to do was say you did not think "Kimberly Akimbo" was an appropriate/enjoyable show for a "conservative" mother. I may disagree but would not find the language insulting.

As someone who hasn't seen Kimberly Akimbo, I'm curious, "What makes the show such a bad choice for a conservative parent?" The general synopsis doesn't seem particularly progressive.

It's not a bad choice for a conservative parent at all, there's no "agenda", not even subtle. In fact KA should be seen by as many families as possible. It's a very profound story about parents/children relationship and mutual acceptance.

Everyone is awfully quick to assume that the ‘a little more conservative’ description means politics. I just assumed her taste in shows is more traditional and perhaps less dark.
A Beautiful Noise would be a good choice if the OP’s mother likes Neil Diamond’s music.
Don’t be scared off by the Merrily ticket prices. You don’t need to pay $899 per ticket to see the show, as you’re going in March and don’t need to sit in the front row. There are plenty of reasonably priced tickets available now, and pricier ones (but still below $200) in very good locations.

I'm looking to buy Merrily tickets soon."
What seats should we be looking at for March 13 or 14 - likely 14?
My mom is politically conservative, but she doesn't mind language. She also watches shows like Sister Wives, so there you go. But she is religious and I wouldn't want to overload her with R rated shows.
I'm definitely conservative when it comes to law. And to see an adult woman that was released from jail who is teaching naive teenagers to be criminals is not OK. Just think that you sent your hard earned money and do what you're supposed to do, but you don't really want to, which is pay taxes and suddenly that money is missing. How would you feel? I am not sure how many people here are independent contractors, but just put yourself in those shoes for a second and let me know how you feel. Thousands of your hard earned dollars MISSING! And you have to pay the government again or you are considered a criminal.
The curse words didn't bother me as much.
I also mentioned &Juliet BTW, that is also very "woke" and some of us, just don't want to see that when we go to the theater. I did enjoy Juliet BTW. But I would never even put Juliet or Kimberly in the same sentence or text after the words even "slightly conservative" were mentioned.

I also think A Beautiful Noise is a good choice but just know it deals with divorce and an affair. I have not seen it in Chicago but I read the book a long time ago so I think The Notebook is a good option too. Especially if you all like Nicholas Sparks.

Guidance involving what does and doesn’t bother your mother is helpful.
As for Merrily tickets, I can’t speak intelligently about every seat in the Hudson Theatre. We sat in Dress Circle (mezzanine), fourth row center. (Those seats are $232 on March 14.) They were excellent seats. I know a popular choice is a few rows back, and those seats currently cost $198 on March 14. I can’t comment on the back rows of Dress Circle or the balcony (less expensive seats) and will leave that to others. I also can’t say much about the orchestra. The only area that spooked me were seats on the far sides but I don’t know if that concern is justified. A few people who bought pricey orchestra tickets have complained that the stage is high.
Hope that helps.

We secured our tickets today. Thank you so much! We'll be sitting in Dress Circle C row F. We decided on Merrily We Roll Along, Days of Wine and Roses (sans mom and aunt), The Notebook and The Outsiders (holding breath it hasn't strayed too much from its PG rating lol). My partner and I may arrive a day early and see Back to the Future as he really seems to want to see that.

Those Merrily seats look fine, and the prices dropped a little since my post. If not, you can blame me. I hope you and your party have a terrific trip.

👍👍👍 Treating it as an appetiser to a main course is probably the best way to approach that show if you're at all unsure about it. It's not high art, but it is a ton of fun.
