OrangeSkittle - That was the predictable exuse I was expecting about why Chicago is more popular?
Guess you didn't know - before the movie of Chicago came out. People would camp out over night at the Shubert for tickets - If that does not show that it was a hot ticket before the movie - than you are obviously crazy. Chicago has always been popular, regardless the movie.
If camping outside the theater makes it a hot ticket, I think the Rentheads started that tradition. I admitted that I didn't know about Chicago's success on Broadway before the movie, but how much do you know about Rent?
Unfortunately I don't see it doing anything even close to Chicago's business. Not that I wouldn't love it too, I adore RENT. But I think you forget that, besides everything else, basically CHICAGO was a GLAMOROUS musical !! To the average cinemagoer, musical means sparkle, glamour and beautiful girls. I will be very happy if RENT does around 60 - 70 million dollars. After all, people are talking about Chicago and Phantom but forget EVITA. The most famous musical at its time, with the world's most recognisable star and it only grossed 55 million in the U.S !!!

Just for comparison of what LJay and Orange Skittles were discussing, here are the attendance records for Rent and Chicago several months prior to the release of Chicago the movie.
2002:
July 29 - August 4 Rent 73.2% Chicago 60.0%
August 26 - September 1 Rent 93.8% Chicago 67.3%
September 9-15 Rent 60.1% Chicago 40.8%
October 7-13 Rent 83.3% Chicago 82.3%
October 14-20 Rent 89.9% Chicago 71.8%
November 4-10 Rent 87.2% Chicago 78.6%
November 18-24 Rent 76.2% Chicago 66.3%
December 9-15 Rent 89.9% Chicago 71.9%
This is just a sampling (I clicked on random dates at http://www.playbill.com/news/search/?list_skip=100&keyword=&feat_loc=&Writer=§ion=7) but it seems that Rent was closer to selling out than Chicago prior to the release of the movie and that Chicago numbers weren't as good as they are post movie.
You guys can continue your discussion, but I just hate it when people talk without facts.
i still think that some of chicago's draw was the big name movie stars that were in it. not many people know who wilson is, or even adam. taye, jesse, and rosario will be the bigger names to people. (and yes, adam looks so smokin hot. and i love how they cut to wilson removing his wig when they sing the line about "the way that she died,". i am so excited.

I'm not sure how the movie will make it in the box office. As long as it's better than Phantom it'll be great. I know some people who've never heard of RENT before want to see it already cause they saw the trailer and they're spreading it around. So far, I know of maybe four or five 13 year olds who are thinking of seeing it. So far, so good amongst the young people; I just hope they know what they're getting into.
I really really hope its a success; it does lie on the reviews
"(just hoping Columbus didnt absolutley wreck it a la Shumacker (sp)'s Phantom)"
i have more respect for Schumaker for that film as a director as I do for Andrew Lloyd Webber as a composer..
and Chris Columbus *kind of* ruined Harry Potter so I'm really really nervous about this..geez why couldnt they get peter jackson :)

The X-factor: Rent's rating. If it's done halfway the way it should be, it'll be rated R, while Phantom was PG-13, as was Chicago. The number one moviegoing audience - and the one that any movie needs to be a hit, especially Rent - is 13-17 year olds. If those kids want to see it, most of them will find a way, one way or another, but those that take heed to the ratings may cost Rent some $$.
BTW, if all goes well, Rent could very well make WAY more money than Chicago made, and might even pull out an Oscar or two. Will it? I think it will be fairly successful, weather or not it's really good, but as much as Chicago? I wouldn't bet against it, but I won't say it will, either. More than Phantom? Probably.
Another X-factor (a "Y-factor", I guess) is The Producers. However, if Rent is still box office relevent by the time The Producers is released, then it probably has already done a good job.
Hey, when does The Producers trailer come out?
Thank you, Matt10827. I didn't know Playbill.com's records went back that far, so I didn't think to check it out myself.
And it's Joel Schumacher. Sorry, I have a German ch- in my last name and it kills me when I see people pronouncing/spelling it wrong. And I happened to be watching another movie he directed right now, and the DVD case is sitting right next to me.
