I recently saw Rent for the first time and was amazed and thoroughly entertained, but I had one question...
Why is Mark under the sheet with the other couples during the song "Contact?" He is alone from them in the next scene ("Halloween") and throughout much of the show. It seems like an odd choice to have him under the sheet to me.
You don't need to be with someone to...errmmm....make 'contact'
I believe he also asks, "Where'd it go?"
Something you can see from Ben Stiller in SOMETHING ABOUT MARY...
You know, I saw the show again last week. It was the first time that had ever crossed my mind - but I decided not to ask. I sort of figured it was better left alone, or something - and brushed it off as one of those tiny incoherencies that Rent does have.
But yes, I did assume what Nard would be referring to.
That's the only directorial blunder you found in Rent?
I'll add a little bit more - Contact, to me, was never really truly one thing; I mean, in the RENT book even, Wilson says something about how difficult it was to find the right way to play that scene... something like "he's having an orgasm and dying at the same time."
That said, Contact's kind of metaphorical; I guess, what I mean to say is that it's not all just about the sex. It's about those relationships falling apart, in a non-physical way, too. And throughout the whole story, Mark is the observer. He watches things happen around him. I'm not at all saying that like... Mark is sitting there watching all of his friends have sex with each other, but in a totally different way, maybe it IS appropriate to have him there. All of these things that happen around him - things that are totally out of his control.
I wonder how big that white sheet is...
*mind boggles*

So, Emcee, you're saying Mark likes to watch? :)
Also, I think Benny is there, too. Who's HE with?
noooo, that's what I'm NOT saying! I knew someone would say that, though.
Is Benny in there? hm.... invisible Allison?
I'm not saying this to be vulgar, but Mark is definately lonely and is watching all his friends around him in relationships
AND he flat out say "Mucho Mastrobation" in "La Vie Boheme"
Just a thought
Actually, Roger says 'Where'd it go?' I know this because Adam says it really funny on the CD.
I don't think it's supposed to show the couples, because they don't sing as couples, they sing as groups. I think it's just supposed to show how things happen.
It's also in the CD booklet; who says what.
Definitely Adam.

Benny is off to the left. He is the one always doin the crazy stuff off of the fence.
Oops...well, maybe he and Mark were bored that night in their room....Mark set up his video camera....

Well, since there's supposedly a mini-sex scene in the Rent movie with Anthony and Idina, maybe that's Taye's way of getting back! :)
I thought those scenes went away. If they stayed, they could be beautiful.
Benny isn't on the fence, is he?
I thought he was with "Allison" or whatever.
Whatever! I just saw the show and forgot already...
Anthony and Idina sex scene?
What about the Tracie and Idina sex scene?
::smokes::
There are only 6 people under the sheet, Benny is NOT one of them.. Roger is the one that says where'd it go.. I will let you interpret what that means..
I agree with Em about the whole things happening around him that are out of his control. And also yes Star2b I agree on the mucho masturbation part too..
Is the sheet King size? Or is it bigger?
I need a new sheet.
NARD! AVATAR!
Isn't it obvious what he means by "where'd it go?"

I think the sex scene was a clip part of "Tango: Maureen," but I'm not sure. That's what I heard a while ago.
Imagine, shooting a movie where your wife plays a lesbian having sex with a gay man.
pst, jam - that's why it's acting.
"Imagine, shooting a movie where your wife plays a lesbian having sex with a gay man."
Imagine having a wife who looks THAT good...even in Green!
It's obvious what that means - but would be funnier if Mark said it.
Oh God!
