Michael Crawford
Sarah Brightman
I'm sorry. I just don't get them.
Maybe you had to see them live...?
Poor Liza
She is amazing. Period.
Audra McDonald

Barbra Streisand
At least Barbra's name is spelled right :)

I had heard good things about Danny Gurwin...
Then I saw him in Kismet last February and I never want to hear him sing again as long as I live. He seemed to possess a dynamic range and good technique, but the sound produced was decidedly unpleasant and shrill.
Audra McDonald is another one.

ANGELA LANSBURY without a shadow of a doubt. Although, the term 'respected' is rather dubious to me, when considering Angela's voice.
Also, Harriet Harris on the Millie OBC.

Wow! Brian Stokes Mitchell? Colm Wilkinson? Patti LuPone? Laurie Beechman? And one that makes me mad the most, AUDRA MCDONALD? Geez, who DO YOU LIKE, Elphaba3? It seems like only people you like are performers from Wicked...
Oh, and Angela Lansbury? Wow! I didn't know so many of you were that picky!

While I certainly wish *I* could sing like either one of them, the top two that I have to really be "in the mood" to listen to are Bernadette Peters and Audra McDonald.
Audra gives me a headache.

Sherie Rene Scott.
Daphne Rubin-Vega.
And Kristen Chenoweth.
Daphne Rubin-Vega and Ellen Greene are at the top of my list. I can't stand their voices. I can't listen to the recordings they're on because they are just so grating.
Idina Menzel, I'm usually okay with, but when I saw the Rent movie I wanted to throw things at the screen. It was just so bad.

I'm agreeing with that.

Audra McDonald... I just can't listen to her.
People seem to be falling for singers without any kind of depth, flavor,or personality.
I grew up listening to Judy Garland. I never listened to the pop music of my generation. Instead I had Liza Minnelli, Edith Piaf, Barbra Streisand, etc. And I couldn't have been happier. Some of the people listed here (Angela Lansbury, Audra McDonald, Ethel Merman, Carol Channing) boggle my mind how they could grate on your nerves. People seem to be giving up the acting perspective of musical theatre. If a voice can belt and be flawless, then that's that, shows over. But where's the depth?
Would someone like Bea Arthur (who is incredible in my book) even do well in Broadway today?
If the answer is no, then that's incredibly sad.
And that's just my opinion.

Two words: Audra McDonald. I'm not too fond of Brian Stokes Mitchell either. I have to be in the mood to listen to Kristin Chenowith and Shoshana Bean, and I hate to say this, I really do, but sometimes when I'm listening to her, I think to myself, "Shut up Idina!"...

luvliza89, correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this thread specifically pertains to voices.. not anything that otherwise may be something essential onstage.
So if a voice can belt and be flawless, then that IS that-- you won't find them in this thread.
Not really a Michael Crawford fan here. He sounds like a very wimpy Phantom.

WTF was that for? Everyone's entitled to their opinion. For the record, I will list the voices that I DO love. And they're not all from Wicked.

I can't believe how many people can't stand to listen to Idina. I mean even if you don't like the mainstream broadway i.e. rent/wicked...how about See What I Wanna See, Wild Party, or even her independent recordings. She has to be one of my favorites to listen to. Same thing goes with Sherie Rene Scott, her recordings are phenomenal to me but then again, it's my opinon. Well here is my listing of respected broadway stars that errk me a bit -
Patti Lapone is on my list as well
Michael Crawford
Marissa Joan Winokur, Anthony Rapp (Marissa did win the tony...not sure how legendary she is....and Anthony does get to me a little)
Leading Actor Joined: 3/31/04
Betty Buckley, only good for peeling paint off walls
Mandy Patinkin, self-indulgent public masturbation
Forgot to add Elaine Paige.
Robert Goulet is another one for me.
I think maybe some of us should list the singers we DO like after listing the ones we don't so there's no passive aggressive "I can't believe people are listing this person and that person" posts from anyone.
