re: Respected singers whose voices grate your nerves

I'm really stunned so many people don't like Audra.

I think a lot of the performers mentioned thus far are among those performers that "you just have to see". For example, I could NEVER. EVER. listen to the Hello, Dolly! OBC because of Carol Channing, then I saw her on tour and I can't stop listening to her. Performers with a great "uniqueness" to their voice, such as Merman, Channing, LuPone, Patinkin, and Liza I think don't always transfer well to record - part of their magic is their skill as a performer, rather than just as sheer singers. (note: I love all of those I mentioned above - there are very few people I don't like, actually, as whom I mentioned before.)

Sarah Brightman.

Granted, I am more annoyed by watching her sing than just listening, because I can't stand her blank, wide-eyed gape, but her voice still just annoys the crap out of me.

Sutton Foster when she does an "ooooo" sounds like Grace Adler singing. All of you that watch will and grace will understand.

Chenowith. No particular reason.

Hugh Jackman. Just because he always seems a little off-key.

Heather Headley. While she doesn't greate my nerves per se, I just don't get it. Besides on "The Gods Love Nubia", she's never impressed me too much.

I don't think not having seen a performer in person is the reason why some highly regarded singers' voices drive some people batty. What is or isn't pleasing to the human ear is always highly subjective.

When someone says they don't care for a particular person's voice, they are merely stating their opinion. And because it's nothing more than an opinion, it's neither right nor wrong.

So stating , "I don't see how anyone can't like ________'s voice", misses the point.
