"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness. Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings. Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end. But end it does. Another part of you vanishes. That's show business."-Anonymous

Heather Headley. While she doesn't greate my nerves per se, I just don't get it. Besides on "The Gods Love Nubia", she's never impressed me too much.

Thank you! No one else I have ever talked to has said they don't like her. She does this crescendo thing where she gets louder at the end of each word and it drives me up a wall.

"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife

Stephanie J. Block

Stephanie J. Block, she just sings with this crazy weird accent.
Ellen Greene, someone take away her vocal chords.
Patti Lupone's vibrato drives me insane.
And Alan Cumming can't sing.

I don't particularly care for the timbre of Judy Kuhn's voice, nor am I an enormous fan of the consonant-free wonder that is La Lupone.

I also really, really, REALLY cannot bear to listen to Raul Esparza and that horrifying Parkinson's tremble he calls a vibrato.

Suzanne: I never use catalogs. I'd rather go in the store and see all the salespeople groveling and sucking up to you. Julia: Pardon me, I never knew they were so solicitous at the K-Mart.

Ethel Merman. I just can't stand her belt...at all.
"Chicago is it's own incredible theater town right there smack down in the middle of the heartland. What a great city! I can see why Oprah likes to live there!" - Dee Hoty :-D

Totally agree. He's a great performer and actor, but I can't listen to him on CDs.

I used to not be able to stand Daphne Ruben-Vega's voice, but now it's grown on me and I love it. Her voice is something I've always seen as needing to get used to.

I really, REALLY dislike Carol Channing and Chita Rivera's voices.

Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long shot.

re: Respected singers whose voices grate your nerves

I was thinking Raul Esparza while reading this thread. I couldn't really stand him on the tick...tick...boom recording, but after seeing some clips of him performing it, he grew on me. Also...whoever was Polly in the original cast recording of Crazy For You, I can't stand her vibrato.

re: Respected singers whose voices grate your nerves

I'm not an Audra McDonald fan either, the only thing I can stand to hear her in is Marie Christine.

And Frances Ruffelle does it for me too. She makes me feel like my ears are going to start bleeding at any second.

Laura Benanti. So breathy. She needs some support.
"People that excel in the arts understand that the journey is the reward...the result an added bonus. Every day I act or train is a blessing and a dream come true. If Broadway beckons so be it. I have a personal definition of success that is unshakable by a possibly unobtainable goal." -HamletWasBipolar
