Ethel Merman. I respect her, yes. Enjoy her, no.
Kristin Chenoweth. Sadly, I decided this AFTER I bought her two albums.
Betty Buckley (on Elegies, especially)
Sarah Brightman
Lea Salonga, on certain songs
Nancy Opel
I think anyone who has ever played Mark in RENT.. they all try to be carbon copies of each other and every one of them while being decent actors are so nasal and spit a lot..

I have to question all those Wicked performers placing them in the category of "respected singers"
Also, I'm surprised a lot of people don't like Ethel Merman! I guess it's a you-have-to-watch-her-to-get-it kind of thing...
Sarah Brightman
Bernadette Peters
Shoshana Bean (just her Elphaba)

I would bet that the majority if not all of those listing Ethel Merman have never seen her live, on stage. If they had they might think differently.

I am SO GLAD some people on here have said Sarah Brightman. She was my first thought, and if I tell people that, they get so offended. Someone almost hit me once because I said I hated Sarah Brightman's voice. I LOVE Michael Crawford's voice but I can't listen to the OCR of Phantom because of Sarah.
In other singers, Kristin Chenoweth's voice really gets to me.

And while I don't know if she is considered a "respected singer" ... Idina Menzel
I agree about Ethel Merman, I mean I'm just 20 and would have never had the chance to see her live in my lifetime, but if I did I might admire her voice a little more. I do respect her because it's VERY rare for someone as lauded as her to have had no vocal or acting training whatsoever. She just had "it".
But like I said, she annoys me only on certain songs
To jump on the bandwagon...
Idina Menzel (in small doses she's fine, but WHY IS SHE FAMOUS?)
Kristin Chenoweth (sometimes--her voice is actually very nasal)
Patti LuPone (her voice is perfect for character roles like Mrs. Lovett, but when she has to sustain big notes--i.e. Norma Desmond--it's painful).
And similar to what someone said about Sherie Rene Scott, Robert Cuccioli sounded MUCH better in the theater as J&H than he does on his recordings. Actually, I would venture to say that he sounds BAD on the J&H cast album, although he was great live (or maybe that's just the way I choose to remember it).
I'm another who can't stand listening to Kristin Chenoweth. Angela Christian runs a close second.

Ethel Merman
Michael Crawford (except in POTO, I don't know why)
Cheno (her pop sounding songs get on my nerves...I prefer her in shows like Candide)
Mandy Patinkon.
Do Celine Dion and Mariah Carey count? If yes - Good. God. Annoying.
Besides, I totally agree on Sarah Brightman!
Angela Landsbury
Cheno (too nasal)
Daphne Rubin-Vega
Adam Pascal (can play one role, only!)
The origional Tobias in Sweeney Tood (I don't know his name)
Daphne Rubin-Vega. I liked her in the obrc of Rent but, not now.
You might not like their voices, but considering "all those Wicked singers" won their roles primarily because of their pipes, I'd say they're generally respected in their industry. It's not like the Wicked producers are saying, "Let's stunt cast with a Shoshana Bean or Eden Espinosa so we can boost our box office numbers!"

Eh, when it comes to Wicked I really can't stand Steph Block or Julia Murney.
I think Julia has a fantastic belt, and I understand her vibrato is a trademark so to speak, but really. I just can't find it enjoyable when it's used so heavily in such long phrases.
And for Steph Block, I find her diction terrible. I understand it's correct from a technical standpoint but it's very irritating and unconvincing.
thank god someone said liza
she's over already, why cant she stop??
*Matthew Broderick (too nasally for me)
*Angela Lansbury
*Sarah Brightman
*Betsy Joslyn (her vibratto scares me)

I find Sherie Rene Scott's high notes very VERY annoying
especially in The Last 5 Years
I can't even imagine her as maureen
I can't even think that far back to when idina actually could sing...those were the days
