It hurt typing it just as much as it probably hurt reading it, but even a broken clock is right twice a day...

The current Braodway Season does seem to be lacking in big new musicals. Not surprisingly Ghost is headed to town, and as with every Broadway season there will be a surprise contender announced sometime in late Fall or early Winter when a show closes early and there is a theatre available.

Am the only one who thinks that Webber is foolish NOT to bring LND into town this year? The Aussie production seems to be doing very well, and there will probably be a lot of landscape available come spring with the shows mentioned in the article probably looking at a January closing when a lot of shows shutter. Its not like he would be coming in up against Book of Mormon or a highly anticipated new show. He would steal the spotlight, get lots of free press and who knows- the show might actually be good- not great, but good. And lets face it- many of the new musicals that have opened and are still running (Memphis, Adams just to name a few) weren't great either.

Yes, there are plenty of downfalls with the show, and of course it will NEVER measure up to the original, but it seems like another dull year like the season before last- bring it in and roll the dice- I think the limelight would be his for the taking.

Just my opinion- now let the brow beating begin!

Honestly, I think most of the new musicals will flop fairly quickly.

Bonnie & Clyde- has Wildhorn ever had a successful show?

Lysistrata Jones- I honestly don't think it will work well on Broadway. It seems perfect for a commercial Off-Broadway run, but too small for a Broadway house. As we've learned from Scottsboro and BBAJ, a sold out Off-Broadway run does not guarantee a hit on Broadway.

Yank- I love love love this show. That being said, it will probably play a limited run through Roundabout (assuming Anything Goes stays, it will probably play the American Airlines, as it would last a week at Studio 54) with the hopes of garnering a few Tonys to transfer to a commercial run (ala Time Stands Still), but I don't think that will happen. Like Lysistrata, I could see it having a successful commercial off-Broadway life.

I don't know anything about Nice Work if You Can Get It.

Name a new musical that's had a "successful" run off-Broadway in the past 10 years? Nothing. It makes more sense to try your hand at Broadway. At least if you fail you can tout the show as "direct from Broadway" around the country.

^ True. New World Stages used to be good for that (Altar Boyz comes to mind), but now that's for recycling closed Broadway shows.

Okay, so again, why doesn't he bring the show in? It has the name recognition, is alrady infamous for the back and forth game he loves to play with his shows (i.e. Sunset) and there is NOTHING major on deck- so someone tell me why he doesn't bring it in?

And "all we need is another flop" is not a good argument" the retooled version of the show has done VERY well, and bty all accounts is a very good show- considering what is coming in so far, I would think LND would be the odds on favorite given the changes made in the Aussie production.

You can hate Webber all you want, but from all accounts the newley rethought Aussie show is much better than it's London bastard cousin.

Well, it is a significant improvement over the London production, that's for sure. I mean, one of my disappointments with the show wasn't just the book but a surprisingly bland set design from Bob Crowley of all people. It felt totally phoned in.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I believe what was meant by "successful run off-Broadway" is a production that thrived exclusively off-Broadway, without transferring to Broadway or aided with a limited run. Off-Broadway, more and more, has almost become an in-town tryout for "quirky" shows, as opposed to an end goal itself.

^True, but there are still a handful on Capn's list that did well never making it to Broadway.

And if you're going to put Evil Dead on that list, you better add Toxic Avenger which had a decent 6 month run at NWS.
