I knew the rumor from a while back that she'd appear in the show was likely too good to be true, but I'd still go see this in a heartbeat.

Maybe it could be like the way random show PEG that Peggy Lee did, a limited engagement semi-autobiographical deal mixing original numbers with past hits.

They managed a musical out of the fairly untumultuous career of Carole King. Not that that's an example to strive for IMO.

to be fair at least Beautiful focuses on the early years, which were eventful enough to be entertaining (the downside for me was the music wasn't all Carole). every pop star thinks their life is a story, probably. one whose would be an entertaining story is Britney Spears.

I want an adaptation of Cher's one-woman West Side Story.

Besty, that's a similar trajectory as BEAUTIFUL, which is actually one of my favorite musicals. I thought everyone involved managed to make the fairly conventional story into something that sizzles on stage, though I admit a lot of my enjoyment stemmed from Jessie Mueller's electrifying, Streisand-esque performance.
I kinda hate the idea of three Chers because, again, what I loved so much about BEAUTIFUL was watching Mueller's journey from the naive Brooklyn teenager to the empowered (not hardened like in most versions of this type of narrative) but humble Carole King that (spoiler alert!) we see performing at Carnegie Hall. But hey, FUN HOME made three Alisons work.

Part of the problem why Donna Summers musical never made it- the story wasn't that compelling (though the hits were great)

Actually I think there will be a bit more drama here - the Sonny years where she claims indentured servitude, her struggle to break away and become an actress, the solo years before she became an actress. I think there is a bit more here to work with dramatically than in Beautiful and On Your Feet.
