16.5? Anyone else think that's crazy?
Aren't all the musicals based on 80's and 90's film in trouble? Because very few of them are hits. Now, the flops on the other hand...

Wasn't Sondheim working on Groundhog Day years ago? Would love to see some of those song sketches.

It's not looking good. I got an email about two weeks ago regarding the cancelation of the first preview but I forgot to respond to it, and I got a reminder last night saying that the first three previews are now canceled. It's hard to tell if this is content or technical troubles.
its a warchus musical of course it will be expensive.

I just wanted to say that I find what just happened with Jorge and PThespian incredibly funny.

When Scott Rudin drops out, you know it's trouble. I don't have to even read Riedel's piece to know that.

Speaking of warchus I am amazed matilda will only last about 4 years. I mean you have an incredibly successful book a resonably successful movie and you will only last 4 years? This show was reviewed as well as hamilton for God sake. How did this show not make it into the annals of musical theater?
Are his shows thay expensive to run? Do they not understand budgets at the RSC? I feel like matilda (even though t recouped) was a flop with all the adulation and massive worldwide press it received as it should have gone for 6 years or so.
I admit Rudin's departure is concerning. However, the fact that Riedel says it's in trouble makes me more inclined to believe that it's going to be a huge international hit and win the Tony for Best Musical.

Lol, I know that. It was just meant to be a joke at Riedel's expense.

Actually nice to see Riedel report something for a change.

Perhaps Matilda is not really that good a show, let alone the competition with Wicked as their target audiences pretty much overlap. Personally, I wasn't wowed by Matilda, and, having not read the book, find the supernatural elements which comes late in the show somewhat awkward, like a lazy way to resolve the plot conflict. Wicked, while having its flaws, has a very accessible and enjoyable story that unfolds grippingly. Besides, with timeless songs like Defying Gravity, which is popularized by Glee, and For Good, Wicked is also a pure joy to ear. While Matilda has good numbers like Revolting and the swing song, it suffers from an otherwise not outstanding score and lacking publicity. It''s perhaps a book that many peeps have read, but when it comes to a "traditional Broadway experience" which most families are looking for, Wicked is the more coveted choice.
I'm surprised Groundhog Day has such a large budget. It doesn't strike me as a property that needs such a big production.

dancing through life thats a good point.
Maybe the show has just been riding on the coat tails of the famous name. Maybe a better show would have run longer and possibly its run longer than it would have if it wasn't named "matilda"
I have been crying all morning ... First SCOTT RUDIN leaves and now this ... WHAT IS GOING ON??? Is this a smear campaign?? Or is it possible that GROUNDHOG DAY is bad? My heart breaks for ANDY KARL .. He is a TALENT and deserves a hit!!! Things must be so tough for him and ORFEH KARL right now. I cannot even imagine.
I LOVE ANDY KARL!! I hope this works out for him... He should be a TWO-TIME TONY WINNER by now ![]()

I can't decide if Skimbleshanks is for real or a truly brilliant performance artist.

I love his style of musical but they always tend to be a little "dark" so I can't imagine that working for this, but I'm excited to see pictures and the design and stuff.
