I tend to agree with him regarding Hyde-Piece liking winning if he was able to be nominated in the featured category.
Riedel calls Karl and Platt locks, but then only lists two other actors (Hyde-Pierce and Cott) to "round out" a five-person category.
Does he really think either Jon Jon Briones or Josh Groban wouldn't get a nomination?
I'm not so sure about Corey Cott...
I'd imagine the other 3 spots will go to David Hyde-Pierce, Josh Groban, and Jon Jon Briones.
^ Yup.
I really don't think there's anything "shaking up" Best Actor, and I'd argue it's the most predictable category this season: Briones, Groban, Hyde-Pierce, Karl, and Platt, with Platt taking the win.

While Platt still has to be considered the favorite, it feels like Karl has been picking up considerable steam.
Nothing for Borle, who had two leads this season? (Not that I cared much for either...) From what I hear, Cott is far from a shoo-in.
I would say it's Karl, Platt, Hyde-Pierce, Groban, with the fifth slot up in the air for the moment. I would not be shocked if it ended up being thrown to Borle in Falsettos (not because I think he is deserving, mind you).

Borle, Briones, and Cott all seem equally likely to me for that fifth slot.

They can easily petition for him to be featured if they wanted. Many parts have been nominated in both categories over their various productions.
Would they petition DHP as featured when they have a great shot at a nomination (and win) with Creel?
Why would the producers put Hyde-Pierce, who is above the title, in competition with Creel and potentially even Trensch?
Edit: jinx, Little Sally!
I thought Midler was the only one listed above the title for Hello Dolly.
She is, but I'm sure they will petition him for Leading.
Reception for MISS SAIGON was pretty cold - I think Borle gets in for FALSETTOS.
Briones is brilliant in Miss Saigon and walks away with every scene he's in. I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get a nomination.

“He might want to break his arm for real,” says a cynical Tony voter. - about Ben Platt.
God that's so tasteless and downright stupid. Why does he keep making sh*t up?
And agree about Briones - he might be a in relatively low buzz show, but he is force to reckon with on that stage. He will be nominated. If they know what's right for them, I hope Miss Saigon performs American Dream (or at least a portion of it) on TONYs.
He didn't include Groban because he has some sort of vendetta against Great Comet's producers- he hasn't listed it in any of these articles all season.
I agree that the likely four are Platt, Karl, Groban, and Hyde-Pierce, with the last slot up in the air. Not that I think this will happen, but it'd be funny if Hyde-Pierce managed to win again- the last time he did was against another sure bet.

He's below the title. They'd have to petition him into Lead.

That fifth slot is tough...Going with a slight edge for Briones.
I agree Corey Cott is going to get in. Cott, Platt, Karl, and Pierce. I think Briones and Groban will have to battle it out for the 5th spot actually.

There is no way Cott is getting in but Groban will have to battle it out for the 5th spot.
Groban got great reviews and has embraced Broadway thoroughly. Why is he less likely of a contender than Cott?

Groban received excellent reviews in a show that is a lock for Best Musical. He's very well respected in the industry - both he and Benton will be nominated. Rightfully so.

"Have you seen Bandstand? Cott is not getting nominated over Briones or Groban!
BEST ACTOR MUSICAL
Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen)
David Hyde Pierce (Hello, Dolly!)
Jon Jon Briones (Miss Saigon)
Josh Groban (The Great Comet)
Andy Karl (Groundhog Day)
I see that the wording of my response was weird. What I meant essentially was there's not way Cott is a sure bet and there's no way Groban will have to battle for the 5th slot.

Ah! This makes sense! Haha.
