Agreed, jdix...I was just using it as an example.
I'd rather see just 3 best musical nominees.

Haha...
Shows have had pit singers in the past. 'Cats' and 'Company' come to mind.

I agree the most logical choice is to nominate Chita in the 4th slot.
The reivews were rather kind, considering it was Chita.
Lets not forget the show is going on a big tour next year, and the nom could help the tour.
I just feel Chita is being forgetten since the show is closed. It just makes much sense to have her in the 4th slot.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 12:03pmFor the other expected nominees they didn't list Manoel Felciano, nor did they list LaChanze.
#30re: Riedel's Tony Predictions
Posted: 5/12/06 at 12:25pmWell, both Felciano and LaChanze were snubbed or forgotten by other awards this season, so I don't think they're a sure thing (though bboth deserving)/
#31re: Riedel's Tony Predictions
Posted: 5/12/06 at 12:31pmI'm still hoping that LaChanze will win this year.

For what it's worth, I agree with the folks Reidel spoke with who think Hibbert, not Korbich, is the most deserving Supporting Actor from Drowsy. But I wish they would both get in.
The discussion here regarding Chita got me thinking and prompted me to start a new, related thread. It's here: https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=896986&dt=0 .

Posted: 5/12/06 at 1:37pmRiedel's comments about offstage singers, at least with regard to JLY and Jersey Boys, have been discussed and debunked ad nauseum. That people still believe he's not hitting every note in that show is plain ignorance. JLY will get his Tony nomination in spite of all the mean spirited, insanely jealous, and flat out stupid people in the theater community.

Reidel might not be perfect, but you have to admit, he knows how to spell.
Seriously, I think it's unfair to accuse someone of racism for not liking The Color Purple.

Very safe predictions from him. You can't argue with any of them, really.
I'm with you, Margo. Burstein and Leavel are my favs for their respective categories.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 3:20pmI was at McIndos last night and some of the Boys from History Boys were there and I got to Talking to the one who plays timms and lockwood and they both said they really have the feeling they won't win for best show. Thats just what they said, so I don't know.

I wonder how many Tony nominators Riedel spoke to for these predictions? There are only 23, so if he spoke to 10 or so, he's probably pretty accurate.

They're appointed. From tonyawards.com:
"The Tony Awards Administration Committee is comprised of 24 members, of whom 10 are designated by the Wing, 10 by the League, and one each by the Dramatists Guild, Actors' Equity Association, United Scenic Artists, and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. This committee determines eligibility for nominations in all awards categories, reviews the rules governing the awards, and appoints the Nominating Committee. It may, at its discretion, bestow non-competitive Tony Awards in three categories: Special Tony Awards, the Regional Theatre Tony Award, and Best Recreation of a Leading Role by an Actor/Actress; as well as Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre. Posted: 5/12/06 at 4:01pmThe nominating committee is always truly bizarre. I have never understood, for example, how Nancy Ford is on the panel every year, even though she has only composed one Broadway show that ran three weeks over thirty years ago.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 5:08pmto answer calvin's question i think the revival of nine took up 3 featured actress slots (jane krakowski, mary stuart masterson, chita rivera) they might have had 4 i can't recall but i think they were the most.
#46re: Riedel's Tony Predictions
Posted: 5/12/06 at 5:23pmThe Producers had 3 featured actors nominated as well (Roger Bart, Gary Beach, and Brad Oscar).

Posted: 5/12/06 at 10:26pmI imagine they get lots of people turning them down. Working professionals many times would prefer not to make such a time commitment of having to attend meetings and see every single Broadway show regardless of quality over the course of a year. While there are those of us on the board who try and see every show, not everyone is like us and aren't crazy about having to sit through shows that don't interest them. And while free tickets are nice, it's not as if someone like Parker has to worry about securing a pair of seats to whatever she wants to see -- she's on the permanent opening night list for every publicist in town.
