This should be interesting and different. LOVE me some Louis Garrel!
Polanski to shoot adaptation of Broadway's Venus in Fur, ahead of D
So a movie about two people in a room reading a script.
Sounds even more thrilling on screen than it was on stage.
Yes, give him another incredibly stagey adaptation to work with because he did so well with "Carnage."
The material for this could be well translated. Let's see what he does with it.
And I bet anything Nina Arianda gets to reprise her role.
EDIT: His French wife is going to play Vanda.
Such a shame that Arianda's performance won't be reprised on film.

I loved the Broadway production and therefore am very worried about what Polanski is gonna do. Carnage was horrible!
In French? NOOOO. Nina, Nina, Nina!!!!!!!!!!
I guess I've never really gotten the love for Polanski's film work- I think Rosemary's Baby holds up very well to this day and is still one of the first movies I pop in around October of every year, but I would be hard pressed to mention any others I feel the need to return to.
I feel the same way TotallyEffed! You can't the movie version without the incandescent Nina Arianda!
Really, castle? Not even "Chinatown"?

Well I guess it will be interesting to at least see what they do with Wanda being that Seigner is practically 2 decades older than Arianda.
^ To me, that's the most compelling and encouraging part of this news.
Why bother without Nina Arianda?
I love this play and think it could work on film and that Polanski could do it quite well. But without Arianda? OH HELL NO.
Nina's performance is one of my all-time favorites but maybe she even wants to move past it now and try something new (that isn't Born Yesterday).

Darnit, why can't someone whose films I don't refuse to see direct these adaptations of critically acclaimed plays?
mysteriousgrowl- to be honest with you- I liked the movie, but it is not something that I feel the need to go back to.
I had the same thought to this news as thebrilliantgrowl-- Then again, Polanski has done some good to great work in clausterphobic settings (Knife in the Water, Repulsion, parts of Rosemary's, Death and the Maiden--based on a play as well, and to an extent Bitter Moon), so maybe the complete waste of time that Carnage was is an exception.
I like the idea of this being in French, for some reason...
Eric, I thought of "Death and the Maiden," too, and was heartened!
Right and the themes and tension in Venus in Furs does seem more fittingly old school Polanski than God of Carnage did. (Kinda funny that God of Carnage was a French play originally, but he filmed the English version, and now this will be in French...)
Polanski's 1971 film version of MacBeth is quite a chilling experience.
I am partial to The Fearless Vampire Killers, though I think Michael Kunze and Jim Steinman did a better job with the story in Tanz der Vampire (let's just not discuss DOTV, shall we?).

looking forward to this. I thought Carnage was great.

I'm sorry, and no, I do not consider this a "political" stance, but NO mention of Polanski's being a fugitive from U.S. justice for drugging and raping a 13 year old girl??
I'm pretty sure SporkGoddess referred to it obliquely...
I have a personal history with issues dealing with sexual abuse--and always take such issues personally, whether I should I shouldn't. When it comes to Polanski, and what's become of his case, I think it shows he's an idiot, has hurt some lives, and isn't someone I would ever want to have as a friend. And it doesn't affect how I see his films.
Which is hypocritical of me. I actually feel kinda the same way about Woody Allen--obviously what he has done was never called rape, but I think there's some similarities there. I think he's vile--in at least that aspect.
*ducks*
