^ Oh I know.
I am glad dubbing dosen't happen today in movie musicals.
Hey! I've got an idea! Maybe Daphne can dub her vocals!
"Wasn't Daphne in her early to mid 20s when RENT first came out?"
Nope. She was in her thirties.
As for Rosario, this is another vehicle that is gonna expand her career. I fell in love with her in "Sidewalks of New York" and have been a fan ever since. I'm glad it's her playing Mimi, and not Ashanti or Christine Milan...

did the bitch finally get the friggin' message?
THERE. IS. A. GOD!
You must have me confused with someone. You tell me if she got the message. You sound just like her...
"It's not so much replacing Daphne [Rubin-Vega] - it's taking this role that has been done by so many different people. I wanted to get it right. I didn't want to be the one Mimi who messed it up. People would be like, "I saw it in a back alley in Ohio and that bitch was better!"
Same neighborhood, Marquise???
You're both such class acts. I can see now why you're so enamored of her.
Bitch's of a feather...
Personal slams to the actors really make you look like the better one here. Really.
I almost posted an actual comment then thought better of it. As it is I will post my indignation in non-commital form.
Em, I avoided actually joining the fight! Yay!

Hey, I told Marquise I was probably through with this topic and I said goodnight but he just couldn't let it drop.
Personal slams against me won't go unanswered. You would do well to vent some of your indignation against the perpetrator. You're confusing cause and effect. After Marquise exhibited his eloquence I couldn't help but notice the penchant these two have for the same word -- "bitches".
I didn't say it first, THEY did.
Does that make them look like the better ones here?
Ack, and I was trying to stay out of this
"them" you are acting as if Dawson called you a bitch too. She was making a general comment in the third person about a non-existent actress. In the world you describe I could say my dog is a bitch (I have no dog) but then when someone calls you a bitch you say I have too. That is ridiculous.
You are the one who is making accusations against Dawson's character. I think you are entitled to your opinion that you don't like her, as others are to love her, and the vast majority of us who want to see the performance first.

I made no accusations against anyone's character. I simply replied using the same the gutter language Marquise chose to use against me, and I couldn't help but notice the similarity between the fanboy's vocabulary and that of the object of his idolatry.

certainly Marquise is not the only one attacked in this comment, and it seems in no way related to Dawson's acting or singing ability, it certainly reads as though you are saying she is a petty bitch.
the major criticism against dawson seems to be that she can't sing.
i've never heard her. but i have heard 5-6 different mimi's - one of them daphne and other mel b.
i decided long ago that mimi was definetely not even close to being a challenging role vocally. obviously, i could NEVER belt out tonight while doing the choreography, but pretty much anyone could kick the song's ass in a recording studio. plus, i love daphne, but she's not exactly a great singer - not at least if you measure technique. i think in general mimi is a role to be acted, not sung, which is why i think mel b (dont kill me) was a great mimi. you've got to LOVE her to believe the whole show, and the only way to produce that effect onscreen is with a screen actress.
plus, i heard somewhere that a person's voice is more human the more "defects' it has - hence why people love adam pascal and sometimes can't stand opera (too perfect).
so, by that crazy logic, dawson SHOULD be a better mimi than daphne, because her voice is more "flawed" and will be a lot more acted through songs like goodbye love and without you.
i don't think she thinks she's better than anyone. i honestly think, from the comments u guys copied onto the board, that this poor woman is trying her best to please both HER usual crowd (non-broaway filmgoers who want to watch an entertaining movie of good quality) and us - the crazy broadway-loving freaks. jejeje.

I'm saying that it appears they both share the same vocabulary. If Marquise chooses to use such language against me I'll retaliate in kind. If the object of his unbridled affection is the cause of his dispepsia I really have no power to change that fact.
Perhaps they should both find a way to express themselves without using vulgarities. Then they wouldn't have to worry about anyone tossing them back at them.
The problem slacker is you seem to keep indicating Dawson did or said something TO you, Marquise did. Alone. That Dawson used the same word in an interveiw is irrelevant to the point of insanity.
She was indicating a use of venacular in a quote of another made up person, it is not the same, at all. She shouldn't have it thrown back at her, because SHE never said it to you.
Your comments are interesting wickedkiwi.
smartpenguin, slacker is using the fact that I called him a bitch against Rosario.
his intense dislike for her is blinding him to that fact.
it's obvious the guy is a brick short of a load.
and you know what slacker, don't put me down because I used the word "bitch". it's just that...a word. at least i'm not so narrow minded and am willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt and a chance to prove themeselves before slamming them at every given turn.
i loved daphne rubin-vega as "mimi", i still do. no one can replace that hearfelt, tony nominated performance she brought to life on the stage at NYTW and at the Nederlander but that doesn't mean that Rosario won't be able to give this character new life on the silver screen. you my friend are incapable.
has anyone considered the fact that daphne may not have wanted the role?? she's kinda busy with her family and music
for all those who claim to be HUGE Daphne fans I havent seen any posts about how exicited you are about her new cd
from her website 21Aug2005 - NEWS update
:: ¿Donde esta?
Hello,
I know some of you are wondering, "where's she at?". First, I'm working on finishing a long awaited cd of much requested music so it had better be good. Second, I am just beginning to hit my stride in the very demanding yet thoroughly rewarding role of motherhood. Lastly, "where's she at" is bad English. Better to say "¿donde esta?". After all, this is America; speak Spanish.
Love, Daphne
besides isn't the rumor that she's doing the voice of Mrs. Marquez
dont you think "¿donde esta?" is a good hint?? think about the main part of what she says in voice mail 5
MIMI'S MOTHER
Mimi, chica, donde estas?
Tu mama esta llamando
Donde estas Mimi -- Call
jajajajajaaj
i am officially in love with this woman. that may be the funniest thing i've heard all week.
this isn't a thread about daphne's new cd it's a thread about Rosario Dawson on playing the character of "Mimi" in the film version of "RENT".
too bad some posters have decided to vent their petty anger at every given turn and turn this into a daphne versus rosario slinging mud-fest which is totally unnecessary.
if i want to praise her cd i'll go to her official website which i visit often and will post my thoughts about it there.
ok, this may be off-topic...but is anyone else hoping the original cast gets to REDO rent? i mean for the movie, try different tones, motivations, riffs, notes, etc? so its a different performance and not the same one they gave 10 years ago?
cause if they do
a) i wont feel like i payed howevermuch money just to listen to the cd again
b) rosario and tracie wont sound like they're the only ones out of place, they'll fit right in to this new interpretation of the same lines and the same songs.
dunno if that made ANY sense.
definately makes sense. based on the clips they do sound different, not just older. it doesn't sound like a copy of the OBC cds.
Well, if you go to the rent film website, you can hear some of the tracks, and the OB cast make their songs sound different...almost unpleasantly (Not a fan of this ONE SONG)- yet Rosario sounds great.
y'all are going to call me a baby but i wanna cry every time i hear adam!!! he sounds so great!
listen to the part in glory where he goes "from the soul of a young man, a young man"...it's what i was saying about flaws in the voices...it sounds a LOT more interesting and touching than if he just sang it with proper technique and all.
rosario definetely sounds like she can sing, and she sounds a lot more mature and less whiny than the rest of the mimi's. that should be interesting.
aaaaa (sorry, im listening to this as i go along)...i love that they're not using their full voices, it sounds SOOO much more clean and intimate. plus you can understand what they're saying. is it me or are the tempos in general slower?
i'm not exactly sure i'm thrilled about the new instrumentation (today for you?), but i guess i need to see the whole film before i pass judgement.
anthony sounds almost the same as before. except older. i love him!!!
question: why are the releasing the soundtrack before they do the movie?
the interpretation has to be different. on stage everything has to be "heightened" maybe even a little exagerrated to get the general feeling and point across to the theatre audience (especially those sitting way up there in the mezzanine).
for motion pictures it has to be brought down a couple of notches or it will come off phony and extremely exagerrated on a 50 foot screen in dts surround sound. the emotion and message become more immediate even more intimate and you get crossovers, fade in, fade out and zooms to get some of these things across via a movie screen.
i wouldn't want adam, idina, anthony, jesse, taye and wilson to give me a carbon copy performance from 1996. best case scenario would be if they tackle each of their roles with a new perspective and give us all fresh interpretations. sometimes change is good and necessary.
as rent is almost completely sung i think for movies they would take the opportunity to use some of the characters signature songs (e.g. Roger's "Glory") and use them more as dramatic pieces set to music to convey what the characters are going through as opposed to it being just "one more song sung, up and out..next.."

What year was she born? Imdb (which granted isn't always right) says 1969.
If Rosario is going to be the train wreck you say, why do you care so much?
MANY people can sing well, just don't professionally.
Hell, how many people are surprised when they find out that cop on L&O can sing and dance, at the same time! (referring to Jerry Orbach).
How about this: We all know Patrick Wilson can act and sing - and can do both very well on the stage.
Yet, I don't think he'd play Raoul onstage.
