I hope they're over the title. I can see it now-- "Hunter and Cuddles in ANNIE!"
I hope they get it and they cast a GIANT Hollywood Name in the part so they'll have to eat face to the press about the "Broadway is for Broadway." They'd sing a different tune if a movie star were keeping their shows afloat. lol
^ That's evil!!! Bwahahahahahaha!!
See, I feel differently about Hunter and Jen. If a Hollywood star is cast as Hannigan, I hope they are offered roles, hold tight to their convictions, and turn the show down, resulting in two other Broadway actors getting hired and ultimately winning Tonys.

I'd love to see Charles Busch as Miss Hannigan. Or better still, as Annie.

I was mostly joking, but it seriously does bother me that they seem to draw a line in the sand as if no movie/tv actor has the chops to do theatre. I bet if they were offered a tv show they would take it immediately and by their own standards should never be allowed to tread the boards again.
I get the actor frustration that all good roles seem to go to names over broadway-known actors. It's why I don't buy the tension of the casting of Marylin on "Smash" because we ALL know in the real world that role would go to Scarlett Johanson or Tori Spelling at the least. lol
I do, however, think all these broadway lady names mentioned so far (Leavel, Monk, Testa, Harris, etc) are all far more interesting choices than any "getable" tv/movie name I can imagine so far.

Love the haters here, you're hilarious. Rosie is living the life you want. She's a fan, a huge life long fan, who gets to do exactly what you want to. She freely admits she can't sing, she can't dance, as most here can't. Yet, she has starred in three Broadway musicals and has the love and respect of the Broadway community, again something none of you will ever have. It's a hard knock life people, just not so hard knocked for Rosie. Good for her.
Yeah but this thread is about the possibility of her playing Hannigan and the majority of the respondents would rather she didn't.
When did the definition of "hater" become "anyone who disagrees with me"?

I'd guesstimate it passed into popular usage that way somewhere around 2004/5, but it had been around a few years prior.
Also, since when does not thinking she's talented mean that we want her life?
If Rosie wants to do a musical, let her join the cast of Chicago. Nothing has stopped the Weissler's from hiring someone who can't sing.
I like these definitions of "hater":
4. Overused word that people like to use just because someone else expresses a dislike for a certain individual.
5. The most non-insulting "insult" in existence. It's a waste of breath to say it and a waste of energy to type it. This term is often used by pre-teen girls whenever someone insults their favorite teeny bopper singers. If you ever call somene a hater, find the nearest knife and use it pierce your lungs for polluting our air with that ****ing stupid word.
Back on topic:
I guess Rosie could be okay as Hannigan. But as someone said earlier, I feel like I can pretty much picture the performance she's going to give.
Also, whenever I've seen her onstage, I feel like she's putting everything in quotation marks; like she's saying "Get this--I'm playing Rizzo!"

I know that Broadway is a business, but shouldn't there be some standards beyond marketability when it comes to casting? The simple fact -- not opinion, but fact -- is that Rosie O'Donnell can't sing. It disgusted me when she was cast in Fiddler on the Roof and the fact that she got some decent reviews depressed me because the woman CANNOT SING!
Anybody out there agree with me that at least being able to carry a tune -- O'Donnell cannot -- should be required of anyone with a singing part in a Broadway musical?
Rosie has proved time and again that she can't sing. Her hideous variety hour from a couple of years ago was a perfect example.
While I agree with much of what's been said about O'Donnell, is it really fair to prop up Nell Carter as an example of star casting that didn't work? I mean, to anyone who didn't really follow Broadway, she was just "that lady from 'Gimme A Break,'" a show that was on for several years but was never a top 10 hit, and it hadn't been on the air for a decade when the last revival happened. To the untrained eye, it would be like if they got Brett Butler to do it today.
Now, Kathie Lee Gifford on the other hand......
Slightly OT, but while we're on the topic: whatever happened to the Willow Smith Annie? Is that being put on hold because of the revival?
Beth Leavel and Mary Testa would be wonderful as "Miss Hannigan." The thought of Rosie as Miss H. makes me want to "sick up." Absolute YUK!

"You're a better judge of funny than me, because you've seen a good production of Annie."
By far the funniest post in this thread, cheers Namo!
Who knew there was so much passion for Annie?! O'Donnell will be fine, she'll play it loud and over the top, and get laughs. Joe Schmo audience member will love it and this new subset I've discovered of Annie devotees will apparently hate it. Such is life.
Love the haters here, you're hilarious. Rosie is living the life you want.
No reason to read any further than that. The "You're Just Jealous" defense doesn't work after the age of 15.
