This needed to be a thread.

Is it just blind sided passion that I want them to skip the reading, take the St. James and make this happen NOW?

At some point Whoopi Goldberg movies-turned-musicals will warrant one helluva review. So far:
The Lion King
Sister Act
The Color Purple
Ghost
Not to mention Cinderella for which she starred as the Queen.

I'm trying to figure out the cast for this.
Cause, in my mind, Krakowski would make a killer Celeste and Chenoweth would be a bizarre but brilliant Montana Moorehead.
But I feel like it's reversed...right?

John Stamos should stay far away from Broadway.
True, but if there was ever a show for him, this may be it.
Love Miriam Shor!

Robbie, I was trying to figure out who was who as well (assuming the characters are more or less the same as they were in the movie).
I figured Celeste was Chenoweth.
Montana either Krakowski or Shor
Carrie Fisher - Shor or Anne L. Nathan
Teri Hatcher - I thought this might be Krakowski, if she wasn't Montana
Obviously Stamos is Robert Downey, Jr and Milioti is Elisabeth Shue
I generally want to claw my face off when I hear another old 80s movie is about to become a musical, but I would see this in a heartbeat.

My guess is:
Kristin Chenoweth is Celeste (Sally Field)
Jane Krakowski is Montana (Cathy Moriarity)
John Stamos is Jeffrey (Kevin Kline)
Cristin Milioti is Lori (Elisabeth Shue)
Miriam Shor is Ariel (Teri Hatcher)
Anne Nathan is Rose (Whoopi Goldberg)
Michael Park is David (Robert Downey Jr.)
Daniel Torres is Blair (Paul Johansson)

I def see Cheno as Montana Moorehead. She looks more draggy to me.
"Do this David and Mr. Fuzzy is all yours!"

Posted: 10/17/12 at 12:44pmChenoweth doesn't strike me as ideal for Celeste at all (I actually think Miriam Shor is the best fit for Celeste out of this group,) but since she's technically the biggest "star," she's going to be playing the biggest part. Same goes for Stamos, who's much better suited to David but is almost certainly playing Jeffrey.

somethingwicked, that was my assumption too except Shor has to me Montana. Knowing the big twist for that character (spoiler? haha) Shor is far more um... husky-voiced. And Krakowski is better suited for the younger (looking) flirtier Ariel. But she is a bigger name and Montana is the bigger/juicier/scheming role.
I assume Stamos is Jeffrey too since he's the biggest male actor listed but he is FAR better suited for Michael.

Posted: 10/17/12 at 12:46pmI agree in terms of Shor being a better fit for Montana than Krakowski, khakis, but again, Krakowski is going to be playing the second biggest female part, and that's Montana.

To me, the cast is exciting, but the idea of turning SOAP DISH into a musical seems out-of-touch. The movie was relevant in the 1980s, but the genre is now on life-support with only a few soaps on TV. Will they keep the 80s setting?
Seems like this would have been a good idea ten years ago.

Oh, duh. I forgot about Kevin Kline! Stamos makes much more sense in that role.

I stand corrected!
It's possible the roles could be bigger or smaller than their film counterparts, right (unless people here have already seen the script)? I think Lori's part was bigger than Montanna's in the movie, but it's kind of a gimmie that Milioti is Lori.
Shor doesn't strike me as the Ariel type, but I guess she doesn't have to be in the exact mold of Teri Hatcher. I'd think she'd be the Carrie Fisher role before she was Ariel.
But I know nothing, so please don't think I'm making any proclamations.

Phyllis, I have a feeling that they might combine the Whoopi Goldberg role and the Carrie Fisher role, since Fisher's part wasn't entirely critical to the plot. Miriam Shor could also be playing that part, since I could definitely see her as the brassy sidekick to someone like Chenoweth. That would probably leave Anne Nathan as the dresser played by Kathy Najimy, although that's another character that was sort of one note with little significance to the actual plot.
I'm more inclined to think my original idea (that Shor is Ariel and Nathan is Rose) is right. Chenoweth and Nathan are best friends in real life, so I'm sure part of the logic behind using them was having that dynamic translate to the same relationship within the show.
