Do you have money in Night Music ljay?
What a thrill it would be to see Cook and Lansbury win Tony Awards in the same year.

Yes, tons actually! I just checked up on it tonight, but I will post my thoughts in another thread.
Sheldon, If you haven't, I suggest you read "Stephen Sondheim: A Life" by Merle Secrest. Also, "Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the musical Follies"
I don't even get what the point of Zeta Jones winning would be. To keep the show open? She's leaving, so her win wouldn't guarantee that. She's not giving close to the best female performance of the year. Even Baldwin and Noll gave better performances. Zeta-Jones was fine, and should be nominated, but I don't think she's doing anything spectacular other than helping the show recoup before she leaves.
They've given best-performance Tonys for performances in revues before--even in Sondheim revues--why shouldn't they give one to Barbara Cook?
I'd definitely get behind a Barbara Cook win. She's still got it! And she's never won a Leading Actress Tony.

because no one in that show did anything TONY worthy. I agree that Barbara NAILED "Send in the Clowns" but I don't believe in giving awards to people just because of who they are. There were only a couple of times where they "acted" anything. Usually, the actors/actresses just walked around the stage and sang. You can find that at the nearest karaoke joint. I'm not trying to demean any of the actors because they did a great job, but I did not see anything TONY worthy in that show.
Then you wouldn't have seen anything Tony-worthy in Side by Side by Sondheim either.
But the Tony voters did.

"acting" is how a really terrific talent puts over a song, even if they are "just walking around the stage". Performing a song well is not easy. It takes more than a good voice - understanding the lyric, and conveying what is being expressed in those lyrics. I think you need to have a better understanding of what is involved in "acting" - it's not just saying lines.
I'm glad to see Brantley gave Stephen Sondheim a good review.
That's fine. I am just saying I didn't find anything. If Tony voters want to vote for Barbara (or whoever) that is their prerogative.

Um....I do. I would rather someone act the hell out of a song then hearing a pretty voice (Hence, why I said that Barbara knocked "Send in the Clowns" out of the park). But, to me, a lot of the time I thought they just sang a song and that was it. But, AGAIN that is my opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own.
Do we think Barbara and Vanessa will both be ruled Leading?

While writing his review, Ben Brantley was channeling Kurt Hummel.
I'd like Williams to go into Featured so Baldwin has a greater chance of a nomination. But I'm not sure if Williams would want a featured credit (or that they could really convince anyone she's not a lead with the amount of material she has).
Although Barbara Cook is The Legend, Vanessa's contributions to the show are definitely Leading in my opinion. I think she should go Leading. Seems like a more wide open field than Best Featured Angela Lansbury in a Musical.

Oh yeah, a real "thrill". Just like the award for best actor in a musical last year was such a "thrill".
I would really love if this show got a Best Musical nomination.
Barbara Cook does more "acting" when she sings a song than a lot of actors do in a whole play.
I would love to see Norm Lewis get a nom, his rendition of BEING ALIVE is wonderful.

I don't see Norm getting nominated for this. His part is pretty small, and while his Being Alive was musically fine, I didn't feel the punch that the song is supposed to produce (granted, part of that is from the song being out of context). If anyone gets nominated as Featured, it will be Tom Wopat... because he's Tom Wopat (even if he's not giving his best performance).
Saw Norm Lewis in Company at the Helen Hayes in Nyack (McKechnie was Joanne) and he was truly wonderful.

I don't know if that Times review is a rave, but it sure makes me want to see the show.
HA! MrMusic, I love that the category is now titled Best Featured Angela Lansbury in a Musical. Could they put Cook and/or Venessa under the featured slot? Wasn't able to see SoS. Maybe on my next visit.
