I've seen the show three times - once with Alex Brightman, once with Jonathan Wagner, and once with Will Blum as Dewey. Alex definitely has an infectious energy to him and he does a wonderful job in the role, but both Jonathan and Will were outstanding. I feel like Will has an edge over Jonathan, but I've loved all three Dewey(s) that I've seen. If you do see Will Blum, you will absolutely not be disappointed - he's an incredibly talented guy and his Dewey (and his voice) are fantastic.

Ok the Tonys are over, its obvious to the die hard fans of SOR that Alex cannot handle doing more than 5 to 6 shows per week, I think the management team owes it to the fans to finally establish a scheduled alt for the role of Dewey, people are paying ALOT of $$$$$ on theater tickets and should know which days Alex will be off, so they wont be disappointed seeing his name on the understudy board as it so frequently is.
Ok so please disregard my last post I just read on twitter they finally came to there senses and have finally set an official alt schedule for Will Blum who will do ALL the matinees.

I have never understood why this wasn't the case from the beginning.

"I believe there where still hoping Alex had a chance at a Tony(Which I believed he deserved), but with the overrated show at the Richard Rodgers theater we all knew that wasn't going to be the case
Alex and SOR are pretty much overrated! Boring and loud!!! The kids were very talented tho! Not deserving of any Tony and the committee got it right!! Just my opinion of course! The first show where I left even before Act 1 ended
so it's now official Brightman's only doing 5 shows a week. I don't ever recall a role(male or female) only being done 5 times a week.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Went again tonight and Alex was in. I am so glad I made the decision to see it a second time. I saw Jonathan Wagner on my first viewing. And Mamie Parris was out. But, it definitely is a good show with both casts I saw.

The role seems pretty demanding vocally, scream-belting those high A's probably takes a toll on one's voice after this many months. I completely understand why Mr. Brightman would need an alternate on two-show days.

I agree. There was an interview earlier where Alex stated whoever performs this role can only do it 1-2 years given how vocally demanding (and perhaps damaging) it can be.
I wasn't aware of how severe the situation with Jonathan Wagner was and I certainly hope all is well with him. I loved his Dewey when I saw it, and I would love to see him in other roles somewhere down the line.
The role is definitely a demanding one, and I certainly don't fault Alex for wanting to maintain his health and balance.

I don't doubt that the role is physically demanding - I just don't understand why it took so long for the producers to make this schedule official. Seems like it would have been a lot less taxing on Alex if there were a set alternate from the beginning, and they would have also avoided potentially disappointing audience members who were planning on seeing Alex.
Agreed, it's def a beast, but so are any number of other roles. The people in rock of ages make belting those As look pretty easy. Maybe his voice isn't suited for it. I hope they stop trying to cast within the Jack Black mold and go with people who can sing and act the crap out of it.

But does the cast of Rock of Ages have to do all of the jumping around that Dewey does? And are they on stage as much as he is? I've only seen the movie, so I can't comment on the stage show.

I saw him last year and it's definitely not a different interpretation. It's Jack Black. And since when did jumping around and playing guitar = strenuous exercise? Guitar is pretty chill. Sure, playing a cocained-out Jack Black type does sound tiring, but so does playing a dancing, singing Cat or the lead in The Color Purple.
