So says the show's star, Reeve Carney.
"Yes, you read that headline right – Reeve Carney, the star of the much-delayed musical Spider Man: Turn Off the Dark, has reported on his Twitter page that rehearsals for the show started July 19.
'It’s finally happening!!' tweeted Carney, who said the first day of rehearsals 'was pretty awesome. I honestly can’t believe I’m getting paid to do things my mom would have killed me for when I was a kid! Ha!'
Carney, who fronts the rock band Carney and will appear in the upcoming film 'The Tempest' for Spider-Man director Julie Taymor, is the only officially confirmed cast member of the musical, although Jennifer Damiano (who recently finished her Tony-nominated run in Next to Normal) and Patrick Page have been reported to play Mary Jane and the Green Goblin, respectively..."

Look what I rode to work today!
What he doesn't realize is that he's actually just in rehearsals for The Lion King. The producers couldn't legally terminate his contract so the just decided to cast him as Simba.
"Now Reeve, on cue you slowly walk to center stage to that ladder there next to the ghost-light. Climb to the top and change that bulb up there. We want to see plenty of ass crack, OK?"
I've only seen the gruesome results.
I've never actually witnessed a train wreck in the making.
For whatever it's worth, a friend of mine who has been cast also posted on her facebook about being excited to start 'Spidey' rehearsals today. She had a costume fitting a couple weeks ago.
What show starts rehearsals before announcing a full cast?
One that is trying to give the appearance that all is moving as planned to entice investors to give up their money.
I understand the backlash and the disbelief. But if they finally have all of the money in place, why wouldn't they begin rehearsals? It's not like anyone on this board has any actual idea what's going on behind the scenes. All we have is gossip. But then when we finally get confirmation that there has been casting and that sets have, in fact, been loaded in, there's still denial.
I get that most people on this board and in general either think this is going to tank or even are hoping it does. I maintain that I'm very excited for this.
I will believe it when tickets go on sale and I don't buy one.
You know SNAFU, I bought a ticket to the show that was supposed to open February 25th, and I was refunded.

You have to consider their communications don't exactly do the show a favor.
They started by bluffing about how much money was going into it and then things began falling apart. No one even knows what the show will be like, but it wasn't exactly smart to announce the big names and budget without knowing what they were getting into.
I totally understand that and don't blame anyone for feeling the way they do. But I think, regardless of the fact that SPIDERMAN is most likely going to be an overblown theme park attraction, people should reserve any judgement of quality until they see it.
So who's playing Aunt May? Strichy? I would love to hear her belt out the Bono song 'May's Lament'.
With a lot of prompting from an off stage Green Goblin.
If this makes it to the stage I hope it brings something we have not seen before. At this point it has to be incredible to overcome the bad press. I hope it does succeed.
He's the only cast member? Will he play his own instrumnents too?

What show starts rehearsals before announcing a full cast?
It actually isn't all that uncommon.
Is the first read through simply Julie telling the cast what's going to happen?
"Ok, so there's going to be a big bridge set and Mary Jane you're going to be dangling from it. The bridge will actually be formed out of dancers writhing in unison trying to shake Mary Jane off. Since this a "play with music" and not a "musical", the soundtrack will be playing as Spiderman flies in. Reeve you will be lipsynching."
If only Julie were that coherent with her directions.
I heard the Spider- Pig musical is already picking an out of town venue.
For what it's worth, a lot of shows begin rehearsals before the full cast is announced in a press release. I have several friends who have been cast in the show who all began rehearsals yesterday (Monday). None of us really know what this show will turn into - good or bad - but yes, rehearsals have started and costume fittings have been happening.
Most here will probably want the names of my friends as verification or proof but I'm not willing to do that. This community is a small one and as a part of it, I just write what I know of.
