SYTYCD Winner to be offered role in On the Town

Not sure if anyone has already posted about this (if so I apologize I checked but couldn't find another thread), but it was announced that whoever wins this season of So You Think You Can Dance will be offered a role in On the Town. Not sure if by a "role" they just mean they'll join the chorus, or how long the winner will stay with the production, or other details, but I think it's an interesting concept that could work really well. Any thoughts?

Okay so now I have to quickly start dance lessons, get on that show, win it, and hope Tony's still in the show when I join the cast.

One of the prizes years ago was an offer to join Celine Dion's Vegas show A New Day for a year long contract but the winner turned it down.

I'm sure the winner will never hit the Lyric stage, either because they refuse it or the show closes by the time they would join it. But it's fantastic publicity to be able to say every week it's part of the prize pack, so a really smart idea.

Well, Newsies is (was?) keeping those "So You Think You Can Dance" people employed. Maybe "On The Town" will be the new show? Although from the balcony of the Lyric I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell anyone apart.

They should just open the theater next door as a legit house, and use the Lyric as a concert venue. I sat in the balcony for Young Frank and I felt like I was watching it on Tv.

I think this is a good promo - the show is gonna need all the help they can get in order to fill the Lyric. I second deaming's thoughts; I wonder if they'll close the balcony and sell tickets for just the orchestra and mezz.

That was Season 2, and did Benji really turn it down or did they just decide it wasn't a good fit for him? I mean, Mia Michael's choreography for "A New Day" was extremely difficult and I don't think he could have handled it, unless they randomly added a special part just for him. IMO Travis or Allison (potentially Danielle and Natalie) would have been the only ones who could have handled the dancing in Celine Dion's show from Season 2.

Yes, it is a large theater and I do believe this will help sales. Good for 'SYTYCD' for doing this.

but what if they can't sing?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The way On the Town is written, there's not really a ton of singing for the chorus (or even some of the leads) so I can't see that being a problem.

This "season" of SYTYCD will be over in August, so if the On the Town thing happens, they'd be with it from the beginning.

And tonight's opening number "New York, New York," choreographed by Josh Bergasse, speaks well for what he'll do in the show itself.
