Sara Bareilles sang two songs from Waitress live on this week's Prairie Home Companion. You can hear both of them from links on the PHC page. The songs are "Take It from an Old Man" and "She Used to Be Mine."
I'm betting "She Used to Be Mine" is a breakout song--the audience was unusually enthusiastic.

If "She Used to Be Mine" is any indicator as to what the quality of the score will be, this is going to be one incredible score. Such a beautiful song.

Damn this is good. And I can totally hear Jessie singing it.
Great to hear two great songs from this and a newly orchestrated version of "She Used to Be Mine" after last year's summer concert piano preview. That is a beautiful song, can't wait to be gutted by Jessie Mueller singing it in August.
Jessie is going to hit that song out of the park.
I enjoyed that a lot and completely agree that Jessie Muller will sing "She Used to Be Mine" beautifully.
Selfishly, as a huge Sara B fan, I hope there's some kind of recording of Sara singing the entire score.
edited to add; can we please change subject to reflect the actual spelling of Sara's name? Thanks!

Wow. I just listened to "She Used to be Mine" and that is such a beautiful song. I'm a huge Sarah Bareilles fan and can't wait to hear the rest of the score.
I just started working on a lyrical solo for one of my senior competition dancers this past weekend, and while listening to that song my brain started going full speed envisioning choreography to it. I think I may scrap everything I worked on this weekend and start over using this song. Just breathtaking.

From the context of the lyrics doesn't a male character sing She Used To Be Mine? It wouldn't make sense for Jessie's character to sing it.
I think she is coming from a place where she doesn't even know herself anymore ... where she feels like she's lost her sense of self and even ownership of her own life, thus "she used to be mine." She's reflecting on who she used to be and all she has lost and speaking of herself in the third person.
^ That's exactly what I got from the song.
I love how Sara Bareilles is making her Broadway dreams actually come true, yet she still sticks to the style she knows best. It's actually kinda neat, in her first album, some of the lyrics in the song Vegas are "Gonna quit my job and move to New York/'Cause somebody told me that's where/Dreamers should go/ Gonna quit my job and move to New York/ And tattoo my body with every Broadway show."

Sara is one of my favorite song writers, and these are just glorious. I don't care for Jesse's voice, but this musical sounds very exciting.
The lyrics indicate that the character is talking about herself in the third person. There's also the fact Bereilles says the song is performed by the lead character.
Is this supposed to come to Broadway this season? The score sounds terrific, and I'm rarely into scores by singer/songwriters. What an exciting opportunity for Jessie Mueller.
^If it ends up coming to Broadway this season, I could see Sara Bareilles possibly giving Lin-Manuel Miranda a run for his money for Best Score.
There's been speculation about if/when this will transfer, but A.R.T. auctioned off tickets to the Broadway opening night of Waitress at its gala this past spring, so clearly they think it's happening.
This is going in the same time slot that Finding Neverland premiered. So it's certainly possible.
Can't wait to see it.

A concept album was made. No idea as to when it will be released.
Wow, just wow. Waitress is one of my favorite movies, and Sara is one of my favorite song writers, so I knew this could be good, and those songs, especially She Used to be Mine, proves to me this was a wonderful marriage. Gorgeous. I really really really hope the book is able to live up, but so far I think this show is off to a great start.
Cool article in which Sara talks about the show and how musical theatre was in her blood! I really would like to see this, especially with all the good early buzz it seems to be getting.
Thanks for sharing Drew.
"She Used to be Mine" is a gorgeous song and sounds like the 11:00 number.

Jenna is the name of Jessie's character.
I saw a workshop of the show a few months ago and these songs are really just small examples of the depth and beauty in this score. Bareilles is a master songwriter and each character has a specific style, voice, and emotion attached to each song. Can't wait to see the full production.
HAHA yeah I literally just realized that, my mind was stuck on the actresses, and then I remembered that was the character's name too.
