It is Dan who sings "I was a child, raising a child", isn't it? I was beginning to think that I remembered incorrectly because on the OBC it is Diana who sings that line. Dan makes it much more strong in my opinion (or for me, at least).
Yea, diana sings it first in her distraught state, then later in the song (on abit that was cut from OBCR) Dan sings it with real authority as the song climaxes, before it comes straight back down with a quiet piano riff and dan singing quietly, full of emotion!
I think hearing Dan sing it, at that point, really brings it to light that he's mourning, and has been mourning, their son as well. Though he's been trying for so long to be the strong one, to not let it show and make it seem as though he's moving/moved on.
That's actually one of my favorite moments of the show. I'm hardly a crier, but that moment (and all the way from "Maybe" on) actually inspires tears sometimes...from the moment "How Could I Ever Forget (reprise)" goes into the lullaby waltz and Dan sings:
Something the doctors all missed, The clinic, the ER, each specialist, They said, "babies cry. Allergies, gas, who knows why" But I was a child Raising a chid We stayed up all night, Most nights you slept at his side, But still he just cried, and cried, and cried...
Immediately following this, I LOVE what Jason is doing when, after Dan breaks the music box, Natalie comes in and yells down. Jason yells right back, and then realizes that once again Dan's not supporting Natalie in the way he should - you can just see all the pressures on him come to a head at that moment. I think it's brilliant.
Another one of my favorite moments is when Gabe sings his lyric:
"I am old as time and forever young, I am every song that will stay unsung."
It cuts me to the core every time. Having lost a very close loved one, these lyrics ring so true. Who knows where or what the ones we've lost are now...but this is a beautiful suggestion.
I can't believe this show is closing. Updated On: 1/2/11 at 12:09 AM

He didn't do that the first time I saw him, but he did it when I saw him in early December. It was the first time I'd ever seen anyone make that particular acting choice, and I LOVED it. He's caught up in the moment, and realizes that he's taking it out on Natalie. Jason really does do an AMAZING job with it.
BUMP Since they're closing this weekend, let's bring this thread back.
For those who thought NEXT TO NORMAL wouldn't have a life outside Broadway, well it's now playing in 4 cities, 9 different countries and has been translated into 6 languages.
Yep - good call. Let's get specific. Post your favorite closing weekend stories here, ya'll! (No, this is NOT Kyle Dean in disguise...)
My favorite was watching Adam C.-B. walk into the theatre carrying a case of beer tonight...and then watching Louis H. walk in later with some wine...hope they're all ready to go tomorrow. Guess you gotta ease the pain somehow - we can't all have ECT.
My favorite memory of N2N is from the stagedoor after tonight's performance (yes, I'm still awake thinking about it). My mother and I had a short but very nice conversation about grief and fathers (she lost her own two years ago, as did I), and she stood there and held my hand as I told her about how much the show has helped me to deal with his passing. I thanked her for being so wonderful onstage and off, and she thanked me for being supportive of the show, and then she hugged me and smiled at my mother and I. The whole thing lasted maybe five minutes, but it was really nice to know she cared and wanted to hear what we had to say.
Here's one of those "unscripted moments" that was particularly fun. I posted it in June 2009, and Kyle was filling in fro Aaron who was in Seattle.
I wanted to share a great moment from N2N on Sunday evening (6/23/09). After Diana sang "I Miss the Mountains" she asked Gabe if what she just had just done was a bad idea. I think Gabe responds by saying that he thinks it's a great idea. At that Moment, KDM dropped the trash basket and its contents spilled out on to the the floor. KDM then looked at Alice and said..."THAT....was a bad idea" (referring to his dropping the basket)
As far as "moments" that happen in the show, I love the end of "Light", when the panels rise up in the back of the set and Gabe is at the top of the set belting out SHINE. I also like some of the subtleties that I've discovered like Gabe stepping in and out of the shadows during the middle of Act 2 when Diana finds the music box. Also, how when Dan and Diana sing "the day that I lost you, it's clear as the day we met," Dan is singing to Diana, but Diana is singing to Gabe (at least that's my take on it). The reprise of "I Am the One" is also so powerful to me; when Gabe shoves Dan back into his chair and then hugs him.
I also find the lyric "the price of love is loss, but still we pay, we love anyway" to be very comforting. I had to deal with a sudden and unexpected loss during the summer of 2009, and this line really helped me through that hard time.
Thanks for the memories...I'm sure I'll "see" many of you this evening, but will have no idea who you are! Too bad we don't have a secret handshake or something. LOL.
