Posted: 6/18/04 at 3:24pmMatt_G...I'm glad your experience with "The Dead" was a lot better than mine. It's funny how we all come away from a show with something different and that we can discuss them - our likes and dislikes. I understand where you're coming from..it was an amazing cast and I went hoping to love it and was very disappointed that I didn't. I had the same feeling with "Titanic" - I wanted to leave during intermission, one friend was okay with it and my other friend loved it. 3 of us all had different feelings about that show.

The "Hair" movie tossed out most of the book of the show and cut several of the songs so, no it's not a good representation of the musical. It works on its own terms though.
As for nudity, not only does it not hurt a show's chances of getting produced, it's probably more of a selling point these days than anything (look at Take Me Out, Bug, Naked Boys Singing etc...).
As for what shows we will probably never see revived, the general rule is that anything that flopped in its last Broadway incarnation will probably never attract enough producers in the future to be revived again -- with Sondheim's works being the main exception to that rule. So, we've probably seen the last of "Wonderful Town," "Bells Are Ringing," "Side Show," "Steel Pier," "Jane Eyre," "Sunset Boulevard," "The Wild Party," "Thoroughly Modern Millie" on Broadway.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 3:37pmTHE WILD PARTY has developed quite a following since it's closing. I could see it coming back one day down the road.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 4:25pmCan everyone get something cleared about HAIR please. The nudity in that show WAS NEVER WRITTEN INTO THE SCRIPT. Because the 60's was such a crazy time, the actors doing the show decided they would put it in there. Its not a NEED for the show. So yes they could and should bring it back to Broadway.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 4:30pmI'm surprised no one wrote TABOO or SEUSSICAL. Because I don't think either of them would be revived. Same with Working, Cats and Anyone Can Whistle.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 4:46pmCats made its producers a billion $$$ -- it WILL be back whether we like it or not. "Anyone Can Whistle" will be revived at some point because its Sondheim -- probably by Roundabout which is doing all of Sondheim's flops.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 5:25pmI didn't know Thoroughly Modern Millie was considered to be a flop.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 5:28pmA flop? 904 performances isn't a flop. Anyway, I think it would make a cute revival because it seems timeless.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 5:51pmThoroughly Modern Millie is still going strong on tour and is booked until at least until next spring. This show will also become a favorite with summer stock and community theatre. I'm looking forward to a long future of follwing Millie on road trips, at The Paper Mill, and eventually at the revival.

I think DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES will actually be revived sometime in the future. It's tough to tell sometimes. When CHICAGO first opened it was so overshadowed by A CHORUS LINE that it practically went unnoticed, but then we went through OJ and all the sudden CHICAGO made sense now. It was totally ahead of its time and it's tough to know when it's happening if a show could be ahead of its time or it really is just crap.
I definitely think CARRIE will be revived at some point. Compared to some of the crap playing on Broadway right now, it's not that bad. It never was that bad anyway. It just didn't have a producer. Some of the songs are awesome. "I'm Not Alone," "Two Unsuspecting Hearts" and practically all the scenes with Carrie's Mom are just chilling and I don't understand why it's referred to as the worst show ever. Personally, I think HONK! is the worst show ever...

Exactly...I mean, they're reviving Pacific Overtures which ran an unimpressive 193 performances. Never count a Sondheim show out.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 6:19pmUnfortunately, I'm not thinking that there's going to be a big call for the returns of "The Apple Tree" or "Zombie Prom", both of which I'd LOVE to see.

I doubt we'll see revivals of REDHEAD, IRMA LA DOUCHE, TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA, NEW GIRL IN TOWN, MILK AND HONEY, WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN, GOLDEN RAINBOW or RAISIN.
As for CANDIDE, I'm sure we'll NEVER see another Broadway revival of that show.

Eventually ROSIE will re-vamp TABOO & place it in an Off-Broadway House ... in 10 years, of course
FRANKENSTEIN will not return, however

Posted: 6/18/04 at 6:43pmI didn't realize Mille was a flop. Anyway I was going to say "Carrie" too, I think we've seen the end of that one. Also I pray that "No No Nanette" never gets revived. I could certainly do without that one!

I wouldn't expect to see Rockabye Hamlet, Kelly, or Milk and Honey.
Return to the Forbidden Planet deserves a Broadway production. I don't know what they did to the Off-Broadway production, but it London, it was a fantastic show!

Posted: 6/18/04 at 7:30pmA flop is a show that never paid back its original investment, no matter how long it ran. According to one of its lead producers, "Millie" will close having paid back only 80% of its investment (plus whatever it's lost in marketing expenditures) -- that makes "Millie" a flop. If it runs a long time, some people may call it a "flop hit" -- like "Scarlet Pimpernel" and "Jekyl & Hyde" -- but however you want to pretty it up, it's still a flop.

Posted: 6/18/04 at 7:46pmI've seen "Return to the Forbidden Planet" twice (different productions) and I find it to be hilarious. I would love to see a Broadway production. I just don't see it in the cards...
