I haven't seen The Wedding Singer, Avenue Q, or Oklahoma, but from what I've heard, and the snidbits of videos and songs I have seen/heard from these shows, I don't really konw whats so special. although if I saw them they might surprise me. but I hardly Doubt that. But ones I have seen that I don't get are,
Jesus Christ Superstar- just a really stupid musical idea.
Mamma Mia- It was the third show I ever saw, I was like 6 or 7 and loved it then. but now, I'm just like, ew. It's just rather cheesy and unlogical.
Beauty and the Beast. 1st show I ever saw. I still appreciate it now and all, but; whats with all the hype?
Le mis revival- Never seen the original (I haven't been around the long lol) so I can't compare them. It's not that I didn't like it, it was just too long, and wasn't the most captavating show ever. (not saying that every show has to be, I LOVE like Spelling bee and Spamalot) I just don't see whats soooo absolutely amazing about it.

"Rent (I am ashamed to say that I used to like it.)"
Why are you ashamed? Why do you not like it any more? It's ok to like a popular show, no matter what the elists and wannabes say. Like whatever you want for whatever reason you want. I liked Rent when I first saw it shortly after winning the Tony and I like it now. I'll never be ashamed of liking any show I've seen. Even Bombay Dreams, which was delightful.

"The bad guys are dark, accented or disfigured. Hello? How is this something that we want to teach our children?"
You mean like in virtually any other animated film or film based on comic book heroes? Or westerns? Or virtually any other good guy/bad guy flick. Disfigured/dark characters/clothes representing evil character traits has deep-rooted symbology in Western culture going back for centuries. Where do you think the term "shady" came from? The only "racial" issue regarding the film version of Lion King that I know of were the casting of voices for the hyenas. Other than that, the rest is bogus. In the Broadway production, the cast is mostly African Americans including the roles of the lions (heroes). The most evil character in the film and the Broadway production is played by a WHITE MAN (during which the film references Hitler). So, I think the ludicrous idea of the musical being labeled as "racist" (much less "blatently" [sic]) must have been drummed up by people who know virtually nothing about the show, but wanted to create negative buzz against an internationally popular phenomenon.
PS - The African dialects in the show are almost entirely spoken by the good characters, not the bad ones. The British dialects are only spoken by two characters, one slightly annoying (but a good guy) and Scar, the most evil. If it is racist in any manner, it is against Caucasians, but I never felt that way about it.

On the list of shows I just don't get I would have to add: 1776... I think it's aboslutely boring and dull, this is really just based on the cast recording... maybe if the actor's are REALLY good it would impress me. Oh and "Mama Look Sharp"?? BLECH
and for the one I get beaten over... Urinetown.. Never saw it but my college did it, even taking it to ACTF but... I just don't get why it's sooo popular. I just don't get the humor. I know that it's making fun of broadway musicals but... I just don't get it....
