Titanic - Maybe it had something to do with me being in the front row of orch so therefore missing a lot of the effects, but I was not impressed at all. I wanted to leave at intermission.
Phantom - It was OK. The chandelier was not impressive at all. It went slowly up & down a clearly visible line. Woo? I was much more impressed with the simple effect that made it appear as if what's-his-face jumped into the lake.
Mamma Mia - Stupidest show I've ever seen. I get why it's successful, but I don't get how anyone who claims to love theater could love this cr@p.

The Producers - (I saw the opening of the 1st national tour in Pittsburgh) I don't understand what the hype was about at all, I would have left at intermission but knew someone in the show and didn't want to be rude.

Wicked- I liked it, I didn't love it like so many others do. The first time I saw it, I laughed/chuckled at the jokes, the guy next to me, along with others in the theatre, were like cracking up with laughter. It was funny, just not that funny. Second time, I almost fell asleep.
Cats- What is so amazing about a show that as no plot what so ever and is about a bunch of cats? I saw it at the State theatre in New Brunswick, NJ, and I walked in with high hopes, but during the second act with the old cat singing about the old days and then that pirate play, I was fading in and out and almost fell asleep.
Seussical- dear God, this show is terrible. No real costumes, Horton the elephant is not a fat guy in a gray shirt and matching shorts. This would've worked better if they had better costumes or if they make it a cartoon.
Chicago- what is so amazing about this show? The ensemble never changes costumes, so first Fred is shot by Roxie and is dead, but then he comes back to life? I really didn't like Chicago.
"There are shows that are popular and beloved and I just don't 'get' why."
Because different people like different things? Perhaps? Just a guess. Shows become popular for a vast variety of reasons: Entertainment value, artistry, familiarity, spectacle, escapism, innovation, artist reputation, star vehicle, social/political relevence, song catalogue of a jukebox musical or revue, or sometimes it is just the right show at the right time. And not a single one of those reasons is invalid.
"I don't get why people want to see an artist's work inappropriately smashed together and squished through a story that tries to make it all work out."
Not that hard to figure out. Usually, the audiences are fans of the artist in question and the artist's works are well known and have stood the test of time, especially when the artists themselves are no longer together or living to provide a live performance.
worrell: Fred Casely doesn't come back to life. How old are you?
And why should the costumes of CHICAGO make it a bad show? I think it went way over your head...
Pacific Overtures
Drowsy Chaperone
The Music Man
Hello Dolly!
Guys and Dolls-No matter how many productions I've seen I always end up hating this show and find the songs extremely grating.
Oliver-It always bothered me how Nancy sings this beautiful song about sticking by her man, and then the next scene he kills her. How feminist.
Grey Gardens- Although the actors were beyond fantastic, the show itself did very little for me.
Ok, not everyone has the same tastes. But some of the shows listed are just meant to be fun fluff (Spelling Bee, Producers, etc.) Not everything has to be deep and meaningful.
With that said, I vote for RENT.
Music aside, I'm supposed to feel sorry for a bunch of unemployed degenerates who have to pay rent like the rest of us?

i liked most of the music in spring awakening, but overall I thought the show was kind of lame. I thought "totally f***ed" was actually laughable- and not in a good way.

I would also like to add Les Miz. Too long, not that amazing. Not really sure why it is so adored.
Loved Avenue Q the first time. Hated it and was annoyed by it the second go around.
I would say Drowsy, only because it bored me. i laughed but not like i thought i was going to. i almost fell asleep, and i just didnt get it!
Ok with the people saying Rent coz its a bunch of unemployed people who have to pay rent or kids on dope Hmmmmmmmmmm
Im guessing your pretty young or have never had to deal with poverty or HIV
Its not about them not wanting to pay Rent, its about standing up for what they belive, been themselves, not conforming etc
geez
Phantom
Spelling Bee
Spring Awakening
The History Boys
I DID NOT "get" The Producers or Mamma Mia!!!
The shows I didn't get I only went to because of the reviews on here:
DROWSY CHAPERONE, SPRING AWAKENING....I just disliked both of these, didn't care about them or the characters. Then I again, I LOVED the flops: Loved WEDDING SINGER/HIGH FIDELITY!

Maybe I just have to see it again.

Shows arn't all about flashy sets and costumes! They are about acting. And in Chicago's case, dancing and singing. Who cares if the ensemble don't have 20 costumes like in a show like Wicked.
And also if you are complaining about Fred "coming back to life" think about in shows such as Wicked, all the ensemble play Ozians one minute, and the next are monkeys! lol
"Titanic"
"The Wild Party" (Lippa)

Sounds like you have never actually seen the show. And yet, your icon is of Hedwig. Doesn't add up.
Merrily We Roll Along..I sat there confused.
