Why do you think that this show was a flop?
Because Broadway seats are 90% filled by tourists, and how many of them are going to respond at the TKTS booth to "it's about siamese twins"?

No amount of rave reviews could sell a musical about Siamese twins to the general public.
I wish I'd had a chance to see it and judge for myself. At the time it was running here, I was out doing regional theatre and the DAY the CD came out, two of our cast members bought it and played it 24/7, acting out all the parts and everything - I wanted to kill myself - or actually THEM for doing it. The constant repitition made me thoroughly dislike the show - but in the intervening years, I've come to appreciate some of the songs -and my former acting teacher was in it and raved about the process of putting it all together - so there must have been SOMETHING good about it all.

Don't you just hate it when people like a show so much they never stop talking about it, playing it and keep trying to convince people how great it is. It really turns a lot of people off.

I loved 'Side Show'! I saw it many times and I knew a couple people in it. I can honestly say the reason that it did not do well was because they didn't know how to market it. They were pushing this carnival freak show thing and that just isn't at all what the show is. It deserved to stay around a lot longer. There was a lot of talk after the show closed of reopening it with different producers but that obviously didn't come to fruition. Oh yeah, and Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley should have won the Tony over Ms. Richardson.
Hey Redhotinnyc2, was Barry your teacher?
WonderBoy ! I totally agree about the Tony Award.. Wanted to hurt some people for that one..
Sueleen - you didn't have to read my thread or any of my posts - nobody placed your hand on the keyboard or mouse and forced you to click. Take a deep breath of fresh air and relax - you've gotten your panties in a wad over something that, if you're not interested in, you shouldn't be commenting on. And try to grow up in the process, please.
The show isn't very good.

This bump is brought to you by the letter v and the number 3
Tinny, I was simply pointing out the fact that you, too, found it rather annoying (to the point of wanting to KILL) when someone became overenthused about a show you didn't really care for all that much. Yet you seem to have a problem if people have the same gripe with you. That is all I am saying.
Sueleen - I didn't voice my feelings to those guys in the house when they were singing and playing the cd over and over again - I kept my feelings to myself (and if you'll notice, I said I wish I'd had the chance to judge the show for myself because I think there must be a lot to like about it) - you didn't need to come on my thread and purposely comment against what I was trying to present to people. I don't do it to you and I didn't expect you to do it to me. I used to think you were kind and funny. I've changed my opinion.
peace out, SUE and RED. might i politely suggest you express your personal business in PMs, please?

I saw it and didn't think it was that great of a show. It starts out with the chorus singing "Come look at the freaks" and just gets freakier. It was not an interesting show and didn't have enough substance to back it up. Perhaps it should have played off-Broadway.
Actually, Gotham, I disagree. It starts off saying 'Come Look at the freaks' and then descends into bland pop ballads and generic whiny angst and predictable showtunes.
It wasn't edgy enough, it wasn't mainstream enough. It wasn't pop enough, it wasn't showtune enough.
It just wasn't enough.
(And I thought the dual nomination was insulting to the entire intent of the show -- to remind people that two Siamese twins have completely DIFFERENT three-dimensional personalities and lives and dreams. How sad that even the show's hardcore fans were so excited about the trivia of the dual nomination that they didn't realize they were really just pointing and staring at the freakiness of the whole thing. )
Ahhh but that is the whole point my dear. Hence why in the reprise of 'Come Look At The Freaks' the lights black out and then come up with the entire cast, twins no longer joined siting on bleachers looking at the audience.

I know it often isn't right to judge shows by their cast recordings...but that really wasn't a good score. I couldn't even listen to it all the way through the first time.
See, I loved it. I really was transfixed by the show. It really hit an emotional chord in me. I loved while Emily blew up like a Macy's balloon and Alice got her costumes soaking wet from crying constantly. To each their own though. No one is gonna like everything, ya know. Such is life.

I was actually expecting to like it after all the positive references I've heard to it here. Good thing I borrowed it from the library before buying.
Hahaha! I know what ya mean. Nothing is worse than buying a cast album and hating all of it!
I thought that the show was interesting and original, if uneven. I saw it mostly because an old friend, Ken Jennings, was in it. I guess I admire theater that tries to be more than just pop culture entertainment, that tries to break through boundaries and do things that haven't been done before.
Alas, the show is also a downer, which seems to be the case with a lot of these financial failures.

I agree gymman. (sexy avatar by the way) Someone sead earlier in the thread that it may have done better off-Broadway and I agree. It should have been in a smaller house. I think another workshop could work the kinks out easily. I still stand by the fact that the show was not marketed well but then again it is a hard show to market period.
