As did I, taylor. I just think it's funny
"My Name" from OLIVER! has parts that sound exactly like "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" from FINIAN'S RAINBOW.
I'm starting to hear a slight resemblance between "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" from The Sound of Music and "Harry Houdini Master Escapist" from Ragtime. Mostly during "Better beware, be..." and "Holding his breath, he...".
YES!
Oh, can anyone help me out with this-- I heard a showtune the other day that reminded me so much of "The Long And Winding Road." I think it sounded like the 'many times I've been alone' part of the song rather than the main melody, but I could be wrong. Can anyone think of soemthing that fits that description?
On the topic of ALW ripping himself off, bits of Sunset Boulevard's "With One Look" sound very similar to "All I Ask of You" from Phantom.
I don't hear it. At what point do they sound similar?

"When Mabel Comes in the Room" from Mack & Mabel has a section that's reminiscent of "A Certain Girl" from The Happy Time.

Come to me, Bend to me
and
Music of the Night?
Probably already been mentioned, but I found that "As If We've Never Said Goodbye" sounds similiar to "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again." You know during the: "I've come home at last?" it sounds exactly like "Why can't the past just die?"

When I had my iPod on shuffle the other day, the opening of Time Warp from the Rocky Horror revival came on, and I thought it was Burning Love from All Shook Up. The introductions sound pretty similar musically.
Come to me, Bend to me
and
Music of the Night?
Yup. I've always thought those two were very similar.
Not sure if this really fits the thread, but The Telephone Hour from Bye Bye Birdie OLC came on I thought it was 9 to 5.
'Without You' from RENT and 'On My Own' from Les Mis have similar structures...I play the piano but I'm not a musician so I couldn't really put what I mean into words :-/.

Come to Me, Bend to Me/MOTN both sound like the old song "School Days".

Pachelbel's Canon in D and Burger King's old "Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce..." jingle.
I think Electricity from Billy Elliot and Written in the Stars from Aida sound similar, but considering they're both Elton John, it's not too surprising.

Jon, I just looked up that song and I don't hear any similarities. Can you explain it to me (I'm not trying to be rude or snarky...I'm just curious).
I've always thought they sound similar...
"Whipped Into Shape" from Legally Blonde and that song from Little Shop of Horrors that begins, "He's got your nuuumber now..."

What the heck is with all of these songs biting from Little Shop of Horrors?

Well, this is NOT LSOH related, but: I can NEVER hear "Learning To Be Silent" from FOOTLOOSE without thinking about -- really -- ANYTHING by Stephen Sondheim (you could almost swear you could hear a direct quote from one of his songs in one line). No wonder I keep referring to the song as: "Trying to be Sondheim."
I don't know if this was previously mentioned but the beginning of "In The Heights" sounds exactly like "America", although that very well might have been done purposely.
It has been and yes it is purposely.
Ahh, sorry about that. I only skimmed through the thread.
Speaking of Little Shop of Horrors has someone already mentioned "Somewhere That's Green" and "Part of Your World"? There's that little section at the very end of each song that basically matches up perfectly. Though, both were written by Menken so I guess he's allowed to steal his own stuff. It may have even been intentional. I don't know...
"Far from Skid Row
I dream we'll go
Somewhere that's green".
"Out of the sea
Wish I could be
Part of that world."
