He gets away with it. It's the same composer. Sondheim recycles his melodies all the time.

The first four notes are identical to MOTN.
Billy Crystal even did a bit on this in the movie "Forget Paris".

Here are some similarities that I've noticed recently. The title song from RAGTIME sounds suspiciously similar to 'Cellophane' from CHICAGO.
Here's a similarity I noticed between DREAMGIRLS and WEST SIDE STORY
And I'm Telling You:
No way I'm living without you.
Somewhere:
We'll find a new way of living.

I always think "Fish Heads" for MOTN.
"Daddy left early, mamma was poor." in Suddenly Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors and "...wasn't it scribner's, some magazine." in Every Movie's a Circus from Sunset Boulevard sound very simliar to me.
Not so mch Broadway, BUT...
I'm always lost beginning "Autumn in New York" and "Moonlight in Vermont"
Little Women : "The Fire Within Me"
and "My Heart Was Set On You" from Foster's "Wish"
I have no idea why, maybe because they're both sung by Sutton Foster, but I can't hear one without thinking of the other
"You will return to me." in Now and Then by Maury Yeston and "When finally you come home to me." in A Miracle Could Happen/When You Come Home to Me from The Last Five Years sound the same. When I listen to Now and Then, I always expect to hear Norbert sing "I'll be there soon, Kathy."
"Love Will Stand When All Else Falls" from Memphis and "Hot Toxic Love" from Toxic Avenger sound completely identical at times. Both are David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, but this is actually ridiculous.

ALL the time. Fact.

"Be Our Guest" also sounds similar to another French Can-Can: the French Ambassador's "Ah, Detente" section of "Please Hello" in PACIFIC OVERTURES. And if you change "Ah Detente" to waltz time, it's the same melody as the refrain of "What's the Use?" from CANDIDE.
In FALSETTOS, the line "I quit - that's the ballgame" in "You Gotta Die Some Time" is identical to the line "Third rate propaganda" from the scene leading into "Where I Want to Be" in CHESS.

Sondheim seems to keep writing and rewriting Variations on Another Hundred People.
The iconic shrill three-note sequence Bernstein used in the Prologue of West Side Story he also used repeatedly in Auto Da Fe in Candide.
Even though the whole of 'The Producers' makes fun of / blatantly steals elements of other shows, the line 'I see german soldiers dancing through france / played by chorus boys in very tight pants' is exactly the same as sections of 'La Cage Aux Folles'
"Wick" from The Secret Garden and "Everyone's A Hero" from Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog.
Oh, please tell me I'm not the only one who hears this...
Les Mis, Scarlet Pimpernel, and Tale of 2 Cities all sound very similar...though I love all 3 scores.

Just a four-note phrase, but...
I'm currently working on a production of LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, and every time I hear Clara and Margaret sing "We're on vacation" in the opening number, in my head I hear "Start spreading the news - I'm leaving today..."
I feel like Les Mis and Scarlet Pimpernel really aren't that similar (though they are my two favorite musicals), because Les Mis is continuous music with more recitative, and every song in Scarlet Pimpernel has a traditional beginning, middle, and end, so the melodic structure is a bit different. The songs in Scarlet Pimpernel usually tell feelings or 'moments,' while Les Mis tells the story, as there is no dialogue to explain what's going on.
Les Mis also stays pretty consistent in style-- the songs flow into each other musically AND thematically-- while Scarlet Pimpernel uses very different styles-- "You Are My Home," "Prayer," "Creation of Man," "When I Look At You," "Falcon In The Dive," and "Where's the Girl," all sound like they come from totally different shows.

I've missed this thread!
Speaking of Side Show...
I just recently noticed that the 4-note phrase in "I Will Never Leave You" ("I will never...") is pretty much all over the dance break to "Music and the Mirror" from A Chorus Line. Love it!
For some reason "I could have danced all night" and "Do I hear a waltz" have always sounded similar in my head.
"Reflection" from the animated film Mulan and "Reflection" from A Tale of Two Cities musically seem to be set up the same way as well!
I think 'A Tale of Two Cities' and 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' 's scores are set up similarly, but I don't think they sound "suspiciously similar"!
"Love Will Stand When All Else Falls" from Memphis and "Hot Toxic Love" from Toxic Avenger sound completely identical at times. Both are David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, but this is actually ridiculous
To add, Memphis' She's My Sister sounds exactly like The Toxic Avenger's Kick Your Ass.
Does anyone think "All I Ask of You" from POTO and "I Won't Send Roses" from Mack and Mabel sound alike. They're various notes in there that sound alot like the All I Ask of You.

And the last two lines of "I Won't Send Roses" are very similar to the last two lines of "Colors of My Life" from BARNUM.
