"Are you kidding? its so melodramatic, its very theatrical just with an edge. And of course it did not look theatrical it was just him singing with a band.
in two short sentences you manage to contradict me, and then fully support what I said. very well. enjoy the show!"
What are you talking about?
The music is theatrical and melodramatic
The performance was not theatrical because it was a cast member just performing a song concert style

You witnessed the start of something huge. Either a huge hit, or a huge bomb.
I'm really not feeling the Green Goblin costume.
But the Swiss Miss creation is pretty cool.
As far the "pop-up" book idea goes, it seems fitting for a comic inspired idea.
If nothing else, it will be unique.
It all looks so terrible. Like, Batman & Robin levels of terrible. I'm waiting for Spidey nipples.

I was there today and actually liked Boy falling from the sky. They performed another song during the break from the show which I can't remember the name of, but I definitely was not as much a fan of that song. It sounded pretty manic to me.
However, I am definitely a fan of Mr. Carney. He played one of his own band's songs to warm up the crowd and it was great!
I don't know if this will be any good still, but I am definitely interested to see what $60 million gets you.

Oddly enough, this makes me want to see the show now!
But yeah, they said that they brought his band over, but they'd BETTER have a full orchestra pit for this 50 million dollar musical!!
Taymor's ramblings sounded like her same old gobbledy gook and those costume sketches look more Lion King than comic book.
But, they do seem to have their act together at last. That was a lot of time devoted to the show, world wide hook up with Bono (looking old/sexy and the Edge)and a concert at the Hudson with what looked like paid groupies. Is ABC involved somehow, even Georgie Snuffaloupulous seemed wrapped around Julie's finger:
"looks like you've done it again Julie"?!?
Reeve is cute but didn't come off much like an actor with his posturing. I know it was a singer singing a song out of context but I too was missing the "theatre" feeling. Will the band be onstage? With publicity like this they will definitely get America's eye and sell some tix.
Bono said there is orchestral stuff so they are def having one.

So y'all missed that amazing lyric... ""You can fly too high and get too close to the sun." What a line.
Jesus Christ, this is awful. Even worse than I expected. Taymor better pull out ALL the stops on this one.

There's a vid here I hadn't seen yet of someone talking to Reeve before they performed "Boy Falls From the Sky"

I think it will be interesting to see how well he acts the show without singing into a hand held microphone...
umm.... what was he saying?
Loving the comments on those Comic fan boy sites:
"....Exit Spidey's dignity stage Left."
"... pursued by a bear."
"..a rabid bear with rape in it's eyes!"
Literary Comic book fans!
The costume designs for Green Goblin and Swiss Miss are ugly as sin. Swiss Miss looks like she belongs in a porno version of Metropolis, and Green Goblin looks like a rejected reptile from The Lion King.
Here's the thing about comic book fans: they hate when the **** they love has been tampered with. Bad. But I doubt they'd be shelling anything out for this to begin with.
Yeah, fanboys will not be seeing this. Myself included.
lolol the insults on here are so predictable
"lolol the insults on here are so predictable"
Actually, epic costume failure was the one thing I didn't predict about this. Since.. you know.. it's all there in the comics.
I can't imagine anyone looking at those costumes, out of context, would go "Oh, they're for Spider-Man!".
My favorite responce so far:
"Boy those villain costumes sure will put the "Broadway Musical Theater" stereotype to rest."
It's interesting to hear what legitimate rock musicians can produce specifically for the theatre. It'll be nice to hear legit guitar hooks in a B'way house again. The music feels far more authentically pop than the crap faux-rock musicals that have graced the stages over the past 10 years - I'm talking to you, Next to Normal & Spring Awakening.
Now, if we can only get rid of this need to be emo (seriously... is this 1999?).
However, it's just one song with one nice hook.
JP2, I passed a cheerio through my nose reading that over breakfast this morning.
first off WTF did Taymor do to Green Goblin?!?!
I am that rare combination of comic book fan and musical theater fan... this crossover is just not gonna mesh.
Although I am seeing some echos of a previous flop-
Gigantic sets, bizarre costumes, songs by an aging rocker, lots of wire work.... Tarzan??
To those knocking the Green Goblin costume, there is some obvious concept behind it if you just look at it. Its design as well (but to a lesser extent) as Swiss Miss's both look samurai-influenced. And going with the pop-up book theme, my sister thought that both of them looked like they were constructed out of a collage of paper cut together.
Yeah, Spiderman has gigantic sets, songs by an aging rocker, (If you can call Phil Collins a rocker. Especially compared to Bono/Edge) and wire work... but it has something Tarzan didn't: Julie Taymor. Like her or not, the woman has had an amazingly innovative career, and even looks like she might get some Oscar recognition this year with The Tempest.
Having a concept doesn't excuse the fact that they look like Asian drag queens.
All this anticipation thats been built up around the show, both good and mad, will most likely have me buying a ticket. It's theatre history in the making, regardless.
I forgot to mention my favorite (paraphrased) line of Taymor's Interview
Spiderman has so many diverse villains... so we made one up
P.S. While Phil Collins doesn't count as a rocker the parallels were too good to pass up
