That's not really what she says at all. There are no deffinate plans, but it's still floating around. All she says is that it didn't come straight to NYC like expected, and that it's still trying to come in at some point.

Even though I wouldn't mind seeing this.......if it does come to Broadway well two things
1) If it DOES I hope it goes to the Marquis and replaces On Your Feet, Kinky Boots isn't doing as great as it was doing lets say two years ago but it's doing FAR better then On Your Feet has in the course of a year and half.
2) I kind of hope it doesn't come.....there's a big concern everyone's starting to get about Broadway's future....people think that Broadway is becoming less of the iconic old fashioned capital of theater in the western hemisphere and is starting to become more of a kiddy land tourist land with shows based off Disney movies and teen movies.....which I hope that NEVER happens and Spongebob fits right into the words of tourist attraction and kids

They've been saying that for years. And yet it hasn't happened. There is room for EVERYTHING. Even if all 41 Broadway theatres were booked with "tourist" shows, there is still off Broadway theatre that mostly presents more "artful" productions. Broadway has always been art meets commerce. That's show biz.
Personally, I don't care if a show is more touristy than artsy. I see what appeals to me and skip what doesn't. I've enjoyed touristy shows like SHREK just as much as I have loathed them (WONDERLAND).

Flew to Chicago specifically to see SpongeBob last summer and absolutely loved it. Plays to both adults and children ... and the set extends beyond the proscenium. Needs a proper-sized NYC theatre to fit it in without downsizing. The cast was perfection and I am hoping each actor gets to reprise their role on Broadway.
That said, if you are a Squidward in real life, please do us all a favor and skip the show. And if you google Squidward you'll know if you have his temperament or not.

As Trish2 said in the Frozen board, Gattelli departed the show. Maybe b/c Spongebob is coming next season and he can't work both shows at the same time.

I thought it was pretty damn good! Don't discount it as a kids' show - the first time I saw it, the ~60 year old man a few seats down from me was having an even better time than I was. It was quirky and fun, and Gavin Lee and the actor playing Spongebob were both PHENOMENAL (standouts among a strong ensemble). Sure the material could use a little tightening up (that Plankton song...), but it was in better shape than some other pre-Broadway tryouts I've seen.
And if the show truly is stalled, the least they can do is release the cast recording they made, cause some of those songs are begging to be belted out in the car on my daily commute.

I know they want to release the cast album when they are about to open on Broadway. But I feel that releasing the cast album early could give the show a bit of a push to get here.

I saw first preview in Chicago and loved it! Pure joy, kids and adults seemed to be having a blast. I hope it comes to broadway, it would be a hit just with name recognition but I think it would be enjoyable even for those who go in expecting to hate it.

I actually enjoyed this significantly more than any new musical that has made it to Broadway this season.

As much as I would love to see Spongebob open this year, I don't think it's gonna happen. Most theatre's are already taken, and it seems like most of the shows won't be closing anytime soon. Also, considering that Spongebob's Stage design is pretty big, they would need a stage that could accommodate for that. At the very least, I see it opening probably either very late of this year, but it may most likely open next year.

I would not count on Chocolate having a long run.. My friend worked on the production (outside contract) and he thinks they spent more money on the outside of the theater than they did on sets and he saw it in London. Theater open after the new year.

I mean it was in a big house out of town, but that's just what Chicago has to offer. I think it's actually a pretty intimate show and can play a smaller house really well. The fact they seem to be looking to take the al hirshfeld has me wondering if they will be shrinking the size of the set.

I saw Spongebob in Chicago. The leading man is terrific and the production design is lovely.
The score is by multiple composers so it's very uneven. I'd love to see the show cut to 80 minutes but it will never happen. It would involve taking several pop star names off the marquee even though their songs are dead weight.

With the announcement of Brendon Urie to be in Kinky Boots, that show will get reignited. It wont close. On your feet has not had a week above 70% capacity in months. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory probably wont do well. If spongbob were to go to broadway this year, probably the Marquis in the fall. The reason I say this is because unlike the Marquis, the lunt fontanne is very ornate and I wouldnt want to see it covered up with the extending set past the stage as previously mentioned. The marquis is sizeable, rather generic in terms of design, and modern. Throw spongebob in there and watch it do well as suppose to seeing on your feet put up 59% in the grosses every week.

I could actually see this making a move for the Broadway once Miss Saigon closes.

It'd be nice if the OCR got released soon. If nothing else, it's revenue for the show.

If this does transfer do you think they will wait until Emmy is finished with her Hamilton contract or will they just recast her? She was a big highlight for me when I saw the show so I hope she stays on with it. Though, perhaps it will seem like a step downward. Going from one of the leading roles in the biggest show of the century to a featured ensemble track in a barely average show.

Her Hamilton contract could be as little as 6 months, in which case continuing with SpongeBob would be her choice.

I love Emmy and I REALLY hope she does do spongebob when it comes. But at the same time I don't think they'd not come to broadway just because Emmy is another show. Hopefully though she is able to come to spongebob fingers crossed!

Saw this in Chicago. Really loved it. I think it will have an audience and do well on Broadway.
