Steven Pasquale & Kerry Washington to Star in Broadway Premiere of AMERICAN SON, Fall 2018 at the Booth

I saw this play last year at George Street Playhouse in New Jersey and found it a rather simplistic and formulaic exploration of a complicated subject (the intersection of race and police violence). It didn't have a lot of depth and often felt like an episode of Law and Order. Pasquale and Washington are both good actors -- although Washington wasn't very convincing in her last Broadway role -- but the piece itself leaves me cold.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I'll admit I never watched Scandal, but I did see her in Race, and I didn't care for her acting at all. But it is Steven Pasquale, and a Broadway premiere, so as long as it's not a two-hander, I'd be up for seeing it.

IMO Washington is a very charismatic performer. The interesting thing about Scandal is that the whole cast appeared to be directed to overact, slightly to enormously. Hopefully, after 7 years, this will not be an issue.

With this show, the Radcliffe / Jones / Canavale show, The Ferryman, Janet McTeer playing Sarah Bernhardt (even if the play turns out to be typical Rebeck-mediocre), The Waverly Gallery, The Nap, and Torch Song, this fall is looking to be potentially incredible for plays. How refreshing!!!

Also saw this at George Street Playhouse. Thought it was fine; had some nice production values and though entertaining, certainly did not have a lot of depth. Great show for regional or Off-Broadway, yet with one set, four actors and a 90 minute running time, I believe there is no way that it is going to sell with Broadway prices and with these competent, though not STAR-like actors. That said, I wish them only the best!

Now it's a play with two gifted musical theatre actors who we all wish were singing instead, lol!

Unrelated - I wonder how Washington's voice is. She played Nina in at least one IN THE HEIGHTS workshop.

Kerry Washington also was an original producer of ''In the Heights,'' along with David Moscow, whom she was dating at the time. Last year, I interviewed Moscow, who played Davey in the original 1992 Disney movie of ''Newsies,'' to mark its 25th anniversary. Among many things, Moscow dished the little-known story about how he discovered and invested in ''In the Heights'' at the very beginning. But somehow as Lin-Manuel Miranda's show journeyed to Broadway, Moscow somehow got shoved aside. …

And now Washington will co-star with Jordan, who led the Broadway version of ''Newsies.'' … ''It's a small world, after all! ...''
