Let's all be here now. Let's enjoy Fun Home and the performances and the incredible success of the work that went into making the show. Let's enjoy Sydney Lucas in this and anything else she does in the future. Let's not fret about past events and worry about her future.
Let's feel sorry for the people who thought the show was boring, or whom it didn't "grab" but especially those who don't hear melodies in the songs because something is wrong with them.

""if she doesn't fall into the same traps Daisy Eagan did"
I believe Eagan said her career stopped because her mother died right after she won the Tony.

Thanks for the link. I remember reading once all the attention and pressure got to her and she had some sort of breakdown or something.
I find it very amusing that those calling Miles' performance "tepid" and claiming Lucas was "robbed" are those who haven't even seen her performance live at the Beaumont.
That's pretty hilarious.

^^^ I am no FH fan and no interest in seeing it (I've listened to the cast recording)...but don't waste your time and feel sorry for me I am just fine with the choices I made! lol

Ljay, what's funny to me, too, is that even for someone like me who hasn't had the pleasure of seeing either performance, it is clear that these are both magnificent, worthy turns simply based on the respective cast recordings.
I know I'm in the minority here, and I won't be seeing Fun Home until my trip to NYC in about a week, but I've seen two videos of Sydney Lucas performing "Ring of Keys" now, and although there's no denying that she's precociously talented (and that it's a great song), both times I felt she rather over-acted it. I'm of the "less is more" school of acting. I'm yet to see her live, but based on her performance of her character's big song...no, I wouldn't have given her a Tony. Very talented kid though.

I wonder if there's any difference between the video clips and the actual show in the theater? I guess we'll never know.
Lucas' performance at the Tonys was instant-classic. It has twice the views on YouTube as the King & I performance and will be on the annual "BEST TONY PERFORMANCES" clickbait lists for years to come. And, should she decide to keep performing, Lucas will have no want of work. She doesn't need a statuette to have won the night.
Kad, I agree 100 percent. Lucas gave a great performance--arguably greater on the Tonys broadcast than it was in the theater the day I saw it. (And I don't mean that as a slight; she was wonderful live.)
Having seen both shows, I think--and obviously this is merely my opinion--that Miles deserved the award. But really, it's a win-win for both actors.

The neat thing about her though is she doesn't come off as precocious at all. I've seen her interviewed and she is very mature. This is why I don't see anything contrived or fake about her performance. And overacting is definitely not what I was thinking when I saw the show, or when I saw her Tony performance. I think she has a real connection to this character which is quite remarkable for someone of her years.
Interestingly I was watching the Tonys with a friend and when RAM's name was called, my friend said she thought Lucas was more impressive than RAM. And thought she should have gotten the Tony.
So differing opinions prevail again, I guess.

Sydney did a performance for the NY Times too and it's probably even better than the one she gave at the Tonys, if just because she seemed more nervous at the latter and was rushing some lines.

It's understandably tempting to want to say who should have taken the award based on the Tonys performance. In which case, Patti LuPone would have won over Joanna Gleason. (And I'm a huge LuPone fan, but no . . . )
Sydney Lucas has her whole career ahead of her, she will have so many other chances. Her performance was actually really well done for someone her age.
Ruthie Ann Miles flat out DESERVED the award because in my eyes, she brilliantly reinvented a role that was pretty good already. Lady Thiang being played as a woman who has a fierce sense of pride that she is the first wife to the King and not being jealous of his relationships with the other wives was not only something that hasn't been done before, it was freaking perfect. It was only with Tuptim that Ruthie then played her as being tough as nails, which was always in the script to begin with. Her fire, youth, power and wisdom were portrayed in such a way that I don't think could ever be topped again, Ruthie is truly a rare diamond whose sparkle shines and enhances with time and I think that this performance will never be the last we'll hear from her. Need I mention how freaking gorgeous her singing voice is? I don't think I have to.
If that could happen again to one of the featured roles in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF then I swear that Bartlett Sher was a gift from God. I'm not kidding when I say such things.

I honestly don't think it will be possible for us to circle this block too many times.

Agree. ^^^ It will play out like the Kristin vs. Kelli showdown. Which was decided last Sunday night. But will continue to be a subject of convo.

Ruthie Ann Miles made the role her own!
Sometimes your favorite doesn't win the award. This is usually because you are not a voter and the voters are the ones voting. The voters voting don't poll a constituency and vote accordingly. Your opinion is not related to the actual award at all. So, there is no robbery and it's perfectly fair. It's just not what you wanted, which is irrelevant.
...and don't get me STARTED on Judy Kuhn's robbery!
Don't judge a performance out of context. If you haven't seen the work in its entirety, then you haven't a clue how successful the performance was.
Don't dismiss a performance as "merely" the creation of a director. The director's taste and intelligence in casting and or directing the performer don't diminish the performer's success in a role. Far from it. That just doesn't make any sense.
Regardless: you can't claim director's influence is more evident in one role than another. EVERY show has a director, and if you think Lucas figured out HER performance on her own, you're a tad crazy.
I LOVED Lucas and was rooting for her for the win, but there is no way you could convince me that Gold wasn't HIGHLY involved in getting her to that point.

Fair enough. The voters are going to vote how they're going to vote. Our opinions at the end of the day are irrelevant. So we may as well just close down these boards and not discuss opinions anymore. Just a waste of time.
As a Fun Home fan, I am glad that Ruthie won the Tony; she does a spectacular job with the role - as it has been repeatedly said, she takes a one-dimensional role and gives it depth. Earlier, someone compared her performance to Audra McDonald's version of "Mr. Snow" from Carousel - such an astute comparison, and one that is so perfect for this situation. Nobody can ever some close to Audra's rendition of that number and her take on the character; like Ruthie, she took Carrie Pipperidge and made her palpable and whole. Though R&H were magnificent at putting tunes and lyrics together, their character-building was a different story.
As for Sydney, I bet she was thrilled just to be nominated and receive so many accolades for her first Broadway role. She has immense talent for an 11 year-old; she is not going anywhere. Sydney seems so mature for her age - I am positive she is handling this "loss" well. Plus, from her interviews, she appears to have a deep passion for performing/Broadway, like her brother (Jake Lucas, who is in the current King and I).
11 year old seems the age for young Tony noms. Wasn't Anna Kendrick 11 when she got her tony nom for best lead in a musical?

That's what I've heard too.
