I have been waiting anxiously for the website and trailer to appear. I truly hope Pasek and Paul's THE GREATEST SHOWMAN will be a big hit in the vein of LA LA LAND and MOULIN ROUGE. Great cast: besides Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams, the movie features the wonderful Keala Settle and reportedly more Broadway names. The story of P. T. Barnum may be a period piece, but the music sounds contemporary and vibrant. High hopes here.
Keala Settle is an absolute unicorn. She sounds so good!
Taking a break from the serious issues of today...
This looks interesting but, MY GOD! Please don't let this be another La La Land!
My hope is in Hugh J; after seeing him on stage several times, and the high standards for his performances and material, there will be a "here" here.
I'm not expecting anything like La La Land. This time, both music and lyrics for the songs are by Pasek and Paul, which I'm assuming will contribute to a more musical theatre vibe. I'm anticipating some real showstoppers.

Not to mention, the cast can actually sing. Michelle Williams is probably the weakest link, and she's a better singer than both Emma Stone and whatshisface combined :)
Unlike La La Land, this actually seems to have cast musical theatre professionals.
The untested director gives me some pause, but who knows?

I noticed this, too. His IMDB page is thin, to say the least, but this could point to a real collaborative effort, instead of just a one-man show. His background in visual effects, combined with a seasoned cinematographer, should make for a good-looking production, and the screenwriters are no slouches, either. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I've read some some opinions from people that have seen early screenings and they've been pretty negative.

Well, fortunately, they have 6 months left before it opens. A lot can change between now and December.

Two reputable film bloggers have reported favorable reactions to the test-screening ( it was not a screening for critics) held with random moviegoers.
One is from Erik Davis ( of Fandango - the ticketseller and website owner of Rotten Tomatoes) --

From the tweet, one can gather that he was reacting to Jeff Sneider's report of good reactions to the film screening. Sneider is another Hollywood insider who maintains the website Tracking Board. If you follow the conversastion, Erik Anderson from Awards Watch says he heard otherwise although he says his experience with reports on early test screenings is not always reliable. Further down, a tweeter reports favorable reactions esp to Hugh/Michelle/Zendaya. So, it looks like there are more favorable reactions reported than the one exception.
We'll see. Maybe the trailer can give us an indication of the potential of the movie?
Btw, the final draft of the script was written by Oscar winner Michael Arndt ( Oscar win for Little Miss Sunshine/Oscar nomination for Toy Story 3...and screenwriting credit for one of the recent Star Wars movies), with some inputs from Bill Condon ( Dreamgirls and Beauty and the Beast) and Jenny Bicks. Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey is acknowledged for his long list of film projects while Production Designer Nathan Crowley has worked on a number of movies for director/auteur Chris Nolan. Supervising the Music Department is a known Broadway name - vocal coach and teacher Liz Kaplan.
Gracey may be new as a film director but his work in commercial ads and visual effects has been excellent -- he is a very good choreographer, too. He did put together a strong cast and an excellent team of creatives for this project.

I got the impression that the negative comments seemed to come from those who don't like the musical genre.

Got that impression from where? The people I know that saw it were much more favorable on La La Land.

That should be your indication that you shouldn't trust their opinion. I liked La La Land on a very superficial "it's cute" but seriously overhyped way. I think most folks on this board agree with that.

Overhyped sure but it was an objectively very well done piece of cinema. The only part of it that was dodgy at times was the screenplay (and I guess the singing but that's expected in movie musicals now).

That's cute, froote. You know people who have seen it? Uh-huh. Sure.

Yes I do. There was a screening in Woodland Hills, LA on the 7th June that friends of mine went to. I have no reason to make this up.

Your contempt for the songwriters is more than reason enough.

Makes sense, considering in this very thread I defend another one of their projects. Are they your godparents or something?

Just like you caught me out on my scandalous lie that my friends went to a movie screening. At least we're equal now right?

and some people thought it was a cinematic achievement. just because you don't like something doesn't mean that people who do aren't to have their opinions trusted. wtf
