Next up: Chernobyl on Ice!
This is opening in London in the fall, after a yearlong delay, in a specially built venue. A Broadway run is expected to follow in the 2026-27 season. (The lead producers are Charlie Parsons and Tristan Baker.)
As was announced, this stage version is based on the first movie / book, so it isn't a sequel or prequel like HARRY POTTER and STRANGER THINGS are. The play is written by Conor McPherson with direction by Matthew Dunster. Casting will be announced soon.
Stand-by Joined: 5/5/17
This is going to require a massive cast especially in London with the need to have multiple children for the same role. I don't think using adult actors would have the same impact especially for characters like Rue and Primrose.
I remember when this was originally announced in 2014.
Performances begin October 20 at the all-new, 1200-seat Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre.
Tickets go on sale March 27.
This sounds like something that Brits will eat up, but would be WAY too costly to ever succeed in NYC. Especially since the Hunger Games films have seen progressively diminishing returns at the box office (Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes did $166 million domestic compared to the original film's $408 million domestic). These feel like movies that people enjoy, but are also happy to wait for on streaming. For a production this massive ($$), with a bunch of child actors in the cast ($$$), you need an IP like Harry Potter, Star Wars, LOTR, Marvel, etc that people just devour like crazy. Very intrigued to see the final product though.
