"Noginova has mermaid tails extending from the actors' backsides, when their skirts conveyed the impression. Tails and legs? That's not a mermaid, it's a deformity."
Ouch.
Do you think they'll also improve the mermaid costumes?? They probably have to improve the Flounder and seagull costumes from what I hear.

To me, it sounds like the biggest problem with this production is the fact that it doesn't know when to be metaphorical and when to be literal - and when it does either one, it overdoes it big time.
and with the budget and the fact most of these elaborate costumes and set pieces required a lot of rehearsal, I would assume, it's gonna be difficult to make any changes in them.
Good to hear great notices for Sierra and Sherie, though.
Sounds like the costume designer really needs to get the boot.
yikes!
I think Disney may need to give it a break for a while (yeah, like that will ever happen).
Denver Post review will not be up until Saturday.
I know this will not happen...but just make a few people swim...it will make the audience happy.
Lion King did not try-out in Denver but kicked off its national tour here. As did Beauty and the Beast. A comment was made about the Denver Post. I don't think they have any vested interest in the show. Like one of our news stations, they have been follwing it. our other 2 news stations have mentioned it but haven't really been following it. At least not that I have seen. It is a big deal for the DCPA but it is not the talk of the town.
Here is Greg Moody's review. He is the entertainment critic for CHannel 4 here in Denver. It is a video done live after the opening last night.

Yeah, when Beauty and the Beast had it's out of town try out here, in Houston. The whole city had "Belle" fever. All over the news, papers, etc. I was like 9 then, and I still remember that.

It's interesting to me that she mentions the "undemanding" audiences in Denver. With all due respect to the region, it is true that Denver is not really known as a theatre town, which makes it kind of an interesting choice to try a musical out there - although perhaps Disney really wanted to see how the show fares with more mainstream theatre goers?
Nice review. That picture above the article is stunning.
They sort of look they are on the Alice in Wonderland ride at Disneyland. I'm surprised they cast somebody as old as Sean Palmer as Eric. She's lovely.
Michael Bennett....We may not be thought of as a theatre town, but theatergoers here are not as "undemanding" as you may think. He, John Moore, is not a favorite of ours out here. He always has a snide remark. For as long as he has been writing for the post, we would think that he has seen the change in our audiences. They used to be "undemanding" but not as much anymore. Also we have a nice relationship with Disney. One big reason they are doing the pre-Broadway run is the Ellie. They were looking for a specific size house and stage and the Ellie fit the bill.
"And she'll never understand why it is that the girl has to always make the ultimate sacrifice. After all, Ariel will never see her father and beloved sisters again. All for the love of a man."
Weren't we discussing the other day in regards to GREASE how it's almost always the man who makes the ultimate sacrifice in musicals, and it's actually quite rare/unpopular with audiences for the woman to be the one to make the ultimate sacrifice?

I'm so happy for the raves for Sherie!

"Despite the intoxicating spectacle — and there is lots of it — Zambello wisely isn't trying to fool anyone into thinking we are actually underwater, or that her human actors don't really have legs. It's a much more evocative and suggestive approach. She establishes place, then lets your imagination do the rest. And by not simply trying to replicate the animated creatures on stage, she smartly allows the humanity of the actors to come through."
I am thrilled that this is the angle they decided to go with. IMHO, I think it was a very mature decision and adds depth to the show. I just hope people can accept it.
I can imagine that Sherie is nothing less than DIVALICIOUS in this role.

By the looks of the picture from the "Kiss The Girl" scene on the Denver post, do the eels still tip the boat over to prevent the kiss...

They shock the boat, right before Ariel and Eric can kiss.
