Emcee, I think we had that conversation once upon a time.
To me, the problem is that she hasn't had roles that are dissimilar. Yankee is right, she nailed the characters in Inishmore, Mauritius, and reasons to be pretty... it's just that those three characters were all in the same vein. Even her character in Milk was along the same lines, but she did wonders with that part as well.
I have faith in her.

Anyone who saw her in Blackbird can attest that she is, without a doubt, one of the most talented young performers around. One of the greatest performances I've ever seen. If this is true, I look forward to it.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

Wow, I completely forgot about Blackbird, thanks for mentioning it.

I saw her in Blackbird.

Blackbird was indeed her best same version of the role.
She and Daniels were gobbsmacking.

I actually just didn't like the play. So I don't blame her entirely. I hope she impresses me in the future, but so far I've yet to see the light.

I loved BLACKBIRD! And I really like Pill. I wish she would've transferred with REASONS TO BE PRETTY last season as I wasn't blown away by Marin Ireland's performance.

I love Alison Pill, so I'd be thrilled if she got this role.

I haven't seen Pill live but I thought she was wonderful in MILK. Having said that, I must say I was quite excited about the idea of a star (some of the ideas mentioned in here were quite exciting) in the part. I'm sure Pill will be great though.

Who is their target audience?
Who wants to go see a no-name in a crusty, dusty old play? Talk about a non-event...
No offense to Pill, but I OWN MILK and have seen it many times and did not even remember her character... and I found her performance on the incredibly boring beyond comprehension IN TREATMENT even less memorable. Good for her, but... I don't see this lasting very long.
She ain't no Hillary Swank who, if we remember, even did a piece in SHOW PEOPLE about it when she was about to do the role in a revival that ended up not happening, as I suspect this might.
THE MIRACLE WORKER is one of the pieces that will always have to compete with the classic film... and NOBODY is gonna outdo Miss Bancroft or Miss Duke!

I just don't get why we're reviving this now? What's the appeal?

I have to second what Pgenre said. Pill is a fine actress, but as I said before if this play is going to come to Broadway and succeed they need NAMES. Get Natalie Portman and Dakota Fanning onstage for a 12 week limited run and give the show a chance to turn a profit.

The appeal is that its one of the greatest plays in the American Theatre and its never received a major Broadway revival.

I'd buy tickets in a heartbeat to see Pill as Annie Sullivan. And I concur with MB that The Miracle Worker is one of the greatest American plays of the 20th Century. But Natalie Portman in the role of a tough-talking, iron willed Irishwoman? I think not.

Natalie Portman would be a dream for me, but Allison Pill is fine. I enjoyed her in Milk as well as Pieces of April and Dan in Real Life. I'm interested in seeing this play no matter who is cast, but you're right that they probably won't do as well financially unless they get Natalie Portman or someone like that.

PS - The only thing I see on ATC about Allison Pill seems to be more in the vein of a suggestion rather than saying she's been cast...

I was merely using Portman as an example of the caliber of name that would be needed for this to have a chance. Hell, put in Tyler Perry as Madea as Annie Sullivan. I'd go in a second!

Lauren Ambrose would be a terrific Annie Sullivan.

Oh wow, Ambrose is impetuous, I adore her and would love to see her in the part.

Ellen Page is just about the right age for Annie Sullivan.

I wonder why they're keeping it a secret so long. I've always wanted to see MW on stage. I even had a ticket for the Swank version. Too bad THAT never happened.

I really wonder if it's Alison Pill or not. I didn't realize the Hillary Swank version got as far as selling tickets to the public. Sorry, but why didn't it happen? Does Swank have stage experience?
