Strange. I sat in first row mezz and had a real tough time hearing. We all laughed saying it would not win sound design. I guess you couldn't hear anything at all in the other shows!!!

Tony voters usually get comp house seats so that doesn't really concern them.

Not surprising. The Tony's have had an issue, at least for the past few seasons that I remember, with not spreading the wealth around. The sweep for Dear Evan Hansen got weird. I loved The Band's Visit but as with DEH and Hamilton, I would have been OK with it if they didn't win EVERYTHING.

"sees nine-year-olds in porn addiction clinics"

LOL. If Broadway stars could just marry the opposite sex and/or just pretend to be straight this porn scourge would no doubt disappear!

My fourteen year old saw Falsettos and the porn still seems under control.

Maybe you need a God-fearing and strictly heterosexual awards show to avoid scaring the horses, Broadway obviously doesn't appeal to everyone with its mere multi-billion dollar turnover each season. Something with wider appeal might help.

Do people think the Tony voters gather around a table and lay out how they're going to "spread the wealth around." Lol.

GeorgeandDot said: "My Fair Lady was awkward, but good."

The awkwardness was because they had to rush "Rain in Spain" and "I Could Have Danced All Night" and weirdly transition to "Take Me to the Church", but I think they made the right choice despite that because people seemed to take to the both Lauren Ambrose and that whole production number online. I think it helped that it followed Mean Girls and the differences between the two performances in terms of directing and focus were like night and day. I think it made it clearer why Sher got that Directing nomination and made it confusing why Mean Girls got one.

It just seemed so odd. That last note of "I Could Have Danced All Night" always deserves a beat and a pause for the audience. I think they wanted to applaud it but could not because of that rushed transition.

The more I think about some of the posts in this thread, as an Asian gay man, the angrier I get. Maybe Ar'iel Stachel and Lindsey Mendez should not have been allowed to give speeches because I know some in "middle America" (these posters are assuming as much as this ridiculous post I'm making is assuming what people from "middle America" watching the Tonys are thinking) have issues with Middle Easterners and Latinx folks as well. Read what is happening in our country right now with children being separated from their families and fathers killing themselves because their kids are being taken away by ICE and how nobody cares. I'm sure that's the America those posters are celebrating right now.

It is the parent's responsibility to shelter their children -- physically, emotionally, and spiritually -- until they are mature enough to be taught all the facts of life, to be taught respect for life, and to be given the responsibility to make their own choices even as they are to be tolerantof those who would choose differently.(I am not addressing those religions that actually do teach hate and intolerance, and those religions unfortunately do exist.)"

Equating porn addiction with an unwillingness to allow your children to hear a loving human being thanking their same sex spouse shows that your religion is teaching hate and intolerance. I’m not going to convince you of that, but I hope you might think on it.

Ok I wrote a snarky response, but I'm editing it now and taking it back. I will continue via PM if anyone is interested. I don't mean to get anyone angry, I really do love the theater and want to be part of the community.

I think it would have been an interesting race between TBV and Comet. Especially in the acting and design categories. In almost every case, TBV makes the quiet choice where Comet makes the flashy one so it's about preference. Personally, I think TBV trounces CFA in terms of quality but CFA might have put up a fight because of the sentimentality and because it's a cheesy crowd pleaser. CFA is like Kinky Boots or Memphis to me.

I think the point was that the Tonys are supposed to celebrate and promote the theater, not political agendas, not diversity, not lgbtq issues or women's rights. The deplorables are not watching the Tonys. But smart, sensitive, and religious people like myself are, and I do care, and I wish there were some way forward, to have a constructive dialogue.

Cute, but my point about porn was just to say that parents have some responsibility for what their kids are exposed to. Society should also. I also think that, just as there is global warming, where we are all responsible to each other, there is also a moral "climate" where our actions affect each other.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know that your 14 year old has the porn "under control"?

I would actually love a Tonys award show where maybe one out of the two dozen winners actually thanked God for giving them the talent and circumstances that made the award possible. I know in previous years there were one or two. You have to admire the courage at least.

If people weren’t dead set on suppressing diversity and equality, these concepts wouldn’t be political. They would just be. Art has many purposes, but some of its purposes are to speak truth to power, to make us think, to push us out of our comfort zones, to disquiet us, and to speak up for the less powerful. These are just a few of the myriad of reasons I love attending the theater. I’ll be doing plenty of that starting in eight days and I can’t wait.

Just got home from the show. First let me say that if you ever have the chance to see the Tonys live you should 100% go! It was one of the most fun nights of my life..I can't stop smiling thinking about it. Now about the awards. I wasn't a huge fan of "The Bands Visit" but completely understood why I swept. I am not the core demographic for that show as spongebob came out when I was a kid and was my favorite tv show (still is) and when lived in a house where my sisters favorite movie was "Mean Girls" so I know that, thats why I enjoyed those shows more (Although I can't lie, The bands visit is a much better Musical Musical than the two of those).Sara and Josh were very fun as hosts. The biggest complaint of the night for me were the people around me. On their phones the whole time and filming EVERYTHING. I really enjoyed this Tonys and hope to be back next year....Also I told Tina Fey I wanted to be on SNL one day and she wished me luck. That is all THE OFFICIAL 2018 TONY AWARDS VIEWING THREAD.

I completely agree! Honestly, Norbert Leo Butz took it way over the top in Get Me To The Church On Time . I remember disliking him after his Catch Me If You Can performance and this one was a mess. I didn't really care for Lauren Ambrose- she went in and out for me. There's a beautiful quality to her voice, but it is lacking a lot as well.

The bench scene and "If I Loved You" would have done so much. For an event like the Tonys, Rodgers and Hammerstein's songs areCarousel's best assets to advertise the show, even if they are disappointing in the actual production. People watching on TV don't have the wealth of knowledge to compare Joshua Henry to John Raitt or whomever else so they wouldn't be as critical."

Completely agree!!!

Yes, a horrible season with exception of The Band’s Visit, Once on This Island, Spongebob Squarepants, My Fair Lady, Sweeney Todd (off-broadway), Angels in America, Three Tall Women, and The Iceman Cometh to nsme a few.

Snark aside, it is true it wasn’t a great season for new musicals which is why I’m seeing mostly straight plays (a first) on my NYC trip which starts in 8 days. But as the list above attests, there are plenty of laudable productions if one is willing to travel out of one’s comfort zone.

It's just so lovely to read such bigotry and homophobia on a Broadway Message Board, of all places.  Gay winners can't thank their legal spouses? Should they call them their "roommate" to please the small amount of people watching the Tonys who are offended by such things?

And apparently if you like something that someone doesn't (coughaftereightcough) you're a trend following tool incapable of forming your own opinions.  I'm all for varied opinions, but calling people's tastes and reasons for liking something into question just makes you look like the real snob here.

People really take these awards show way too seriously.  Good for The Band's Visit.  Nice to see something innovative and thought provoking win. As for Katrina Lenk's performance, it was nice to hear a singer favor emotion over vocal perfection.  Watched with my Mom, who typically favors razzle dazzle numbers over slower ones, and she loved the number.

In a time where visible diversity is more essential than ever, it was nice to see so much of that on the telecast.

Selfishly, I was hoping "My Fair Lady" would win, as I have a ticket for Tuesday, but I'm happy with all the winners. I think all the deserving parties won, although Best Play Director was a tough one. What Elliot did with Angels is astounding. But happy to see "The Band's Visit" get praise. I've heard so much crap from friends about it, but not every musical needs a belting diva. It's been done. We've moved on, Mean Girls. And that performance sucked. I didn't understand why any of them were nominated.

Also, I just have to say, a musical isn't a certain thing. It can be lots of things. "The Band's Visit" is subtle and gorgeous. It doesn't need a tap dancing chorus, a super gay character, or crazy belting. It's such a gorgeous little show. Even the performance on the Tonys was brilliant. The look in Shaloub's eyes as he's watching Lenk. The power between the two, the sexual tension. It's brilliant. It's such a great show, and I'm so happy it won over the big, splashy soul-less musicals. And happy to see Spongebob didn't win anything as I think it's just plain awful.

What a weird Broadcast.. taking every opportunity to distract us from the Theatre community with pop and TV celebrities. Was not a fan of Bareilles and Groban as a duo - their styles really CLASH and they're awkward in that setting.

Some really bizarre performances too.. are there any 2 legends with careers that overlap LESS the ALW and Chita?? Not to mention the fact that their speeches weren't televised but then they did a rushed sloppy dual tribute anyway. CAROUSEL doing "Blow High Blow Low??" I understand wanting to showcase the coreo but it was an odd choice. And then the painful Brice Springsteen saga.

Highlights for me were definitely the DEH In Memorial, the BAND's VISIT performance as well as the speeches from TBV winners. I never imagined it would sweep and I'm happy it did (though I too would probably have given actor to Ethan Slater). Spongebob rightly won Set Design, and as much as I adored the THREE TALL WOMEN set I can understand why HP won.

And the Instagram comments left me shook. I never wanna talk to a teen Broadway fan I think I would have to leap a cliff. Just because they are not emotionally mature or intelligent enough to understand or appreciate THE BAND's VISIT doesn't give them an excuse to behave like vigilante lunatics.
