Selfishly, I was hoping "My Fair Lady" would win, as I have a ticket for Tuesday, but I'm happy with all the winners. I think all the deserving parties won, although Best Play Director was a tough one. What Elliot did with Angels is astounding. But happy to see "The Band's Visit" get praise. I've heard so much crap from friends about it, but not every musical needs a belting diva. It's been done. We've moved on, Mean Girls. And that performance sucked. I didn't understand why any of them were nominated.
Also, I just have to say, a musical isn't a certain thing. It can be lots of things. "The Band's Visit" is subtle and gorgeous. It doesn't need a tap dancing chorus, a super gay character, or crazy belting. It's such a gorgeous little show. Even the performance on the Tonys was brilliant. The look in Shaloub's eyes as he's watching Lenk. The power between the two, the sexual tension. It's brilliant. It's such a great show, and I'm so happy it won over the big, splashy soul-less musicals. And happy to see Spongebob didn't win anything as I think it's just plain awful.
