I genuinely loved TBV - I thought it was smart, surprisingly funny, and moved me to tears. I don't consider myself an elite, pretentious snob (I count Wicked and Anastasia among some of my favorite musicals), but I appreciate the small, delicate shows as much as the big, glorious ones. I get that it's not to everyone's taste, but I wish some posters would stop painting everyone with a single brush just because they disagree.
Congrats to all the winners tonight - no matter who wins from year to year, I always love Tonys night and I love the community.
Man this thread was depressing to read through. For a community of supposed theater lovers you all seem to hate the theater, and other people who also love it
Alex Newell & Caissie Levy win the night, showing up thenominators."
Agree with you on Newell, not much on Levy. For me, she redeemed the show after FTFTIF gave a weak performance."
Funny, I had the exact opposite reaction to the Frozen number - I thought Murin's Anna was great and loved that FTFTIF, while when Levy showed up I thought she looked way too old to be Elsa and didn't like how she handled Let It Go.
I was unaware Marc Platt was one of the producers of the bands visit but that’s cool. I’m really happy for Katrina and the entire cast they really deserved all the love tonight.
And why shouldn't people want to thank their supportive spouse. They have to go through the stress you give them while you are stressing out putting on a show or making sure the show is going to go off without a hitch.

How about "deeply offend their religious values" ? I guess there no Tolerance in this "inclusive community" for that kind of diversity. It's not called bigotry, it's called keep your private affairs private. If you cannot conceive of the possibility of someone sincerely believing that gay marriage is wrong, then maybe you are the delicate one, snowflake.
"
You're in the wrong board and wrong community. Asking gay people to not thank their husbands and wives is like telling the straight people to not acknowledge their spouses and children. If a white person thanked his/her black spouse or vice versa would you be saying the same thing? People used to use religious arguments to argue for slavery and against integration as well. Gay marriage is legal in all fifty states and non-discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation exists in 21 states and in more cities."
This is the board for people who love theater, and the thread for discussing recognition for excellence in theater. I am on exactly the right board. I will not keep my morals and ideals in the closet any more than you will. And I doappreciate what you are saying, that it's not reasonable to ask gay people to not mention their loved ones. I'll think about it some more. It's equally not reasonable to expect me to be able to share the Tonys with my young kids if men make it all a big show about singing to their husbands. One day my kids will be older and more sophisticated and able to understand and empathize with all people, all of whomare made God's image.
The racial thing is a straw man argument. Religion has nothing to say about the kind of racial intermarriage you are talking about.
Theatre is a self-professed open community, where outcasts are welcome. As a person who is religious I am definitely anoutcast in secular society, and I would expect more from you all, more inclusivity and tolerance, than I've seen so far.
Didn’t man create god in his own image?"
Yes. I said exactly that in my post.
There are hundreds of books written on the topic of what exactly it means to say God's "image". PM me if you really want to have that conversation. All I can say here is that I honestly try to respect and discern the divinity within every person -- but that doesn't mean I have to condone every choice that every person makes, nor agree with every statement they utter.
In a nutshell, of course people can choose to do and say what they want, but that doesn't mean I won't be offended by what they do or say. So, yeah, I wish the Tonys were a little less gay so that I could share it with my kids and the larger religious community which would benefit from so much of what the theater has to offer.

Actually, those who love the theatre the most are those who are the most pained by seeing it harmed.

I don't agree with this. The Band's Visit won't become a forgotten musical.
Scattered thoughts about the evening and this thread:
1. I knew TBV would get the big awards but did not anticipate all its love. Most surprised by Statchel’s and Shalhoub’s wins. Shlahoub gives a beautiful performance, but When was the last time the Best Actor in a Musical sang half a song in his show (serious question)? I think he was probably the “least predicted” winner on this board.
2. The only shows that will see a box office bump from wins will be Band’s Visit, Once on This Island, and maybe Angels in its final weeks. The impact of the performances remain to be seen, but I think the only other shows who gave what I thought were excellent performances don’t really need box office boosts at the moment (see Frozen, MFL, Mean Girls, and Carousel).
3. I thought Groban and Bareilles did a good, if “standard” job.
4. Caissie Levy and Patti Murin should have been nominated.
5. After seeing the Angel and Sven on the telecast, where’s the Tony for puppet design?
6. Richsmo, thank you for respectfully sharing your perspective. I’m religious and conservative as well, and it’s nice to see that perpsective eloquently shared, unlike Mr. De Niro did with the opposite perspective tonight.

Those who disagree with you are harming theatre, now? Or we don't actually love theatre as much as you?Can you clarify?

It's perfectly fine to love TBV, and I don't suggest that everyone who loves TBV is a pretentious elitist snob. The ones I call pretentious elitist snobs are the ones who call the other nominated shows "trash" and spend all of their time crapping on the people who didn't like it or like/prefer other shows and act like disliking TBV is some kind of crime or sign of mental disability. Those are the snobs. You are not a snob just because you like TBV. I have no problem with you as long as you aren't insulting everyone who doesn't like TBV/who likes the other shows, as some of the others on here do.

"WHY all the hate for Bruce....Chill people and why are we grading performances? Children on this board."
I did not expect him to rock out to "Born To Run" (lol) but if he is going to do a slow and poignant song, I would have like to have heard him actually sing the song instead of talking through most of it.
I'm so glad for all the The Band's Visit love since I am part Middle-Eastern; but I am sad that My Fair Lady only won costumes where the revival should've won more than that (Michael Yeargan's sets were much better designed than David Zinn's sets were). But I am glad an equally great revival won though because Once on this Island was handled marvelously by such a great cast and crew.
It was a tight race between the two and Once on this Island ended up becoming the shocking success story.
Richsmo: I will say a prayer tonight that your beautiful children are able to overcome your limitations and the intolerances of your “religious community”. Children are not born with hate or intolerance — it is learned, unfortunately frequently under the flag of “religious beliefs”.
"Those who disagree with you are harming theatre, now? Thank you for the clarification."
Mmm, I'm afraid you need greater clarification.
Those whoheap hyperbole andawards on rotten shows are harming the theatre.
Enormously.
I hope that's clear enough for you.
Quite clear, thank you. "Rotten shows" are, of course, defined by you. I will adjust my own opinions accordingly, I wouldn't want to erroneously like "rotten shows."
Has it ever occurred to you that there are opinions other than yours, and that they are equally valid? I truly am sorry for you if this is the way you "enjoy" theatre: by constantly lamenting how everything is terrible. There is a great wide world of theatre out there and an equally wide world of opinions and tastes, some of which are reflected in awards and some which are not. I find joy in a wide range of theatre, and I don't apologize for that. I hope someday that same joy will find you.

I agree, this was one award that surprised me. Most critics I read did not have him winning.

That seems to be the MO of these boards more often than not, unfortunately.

Yes, hate or intolerance is learned from being sheltered by parents

It always seems like it's this nostalgia for "when theatre was ACTUALLY good." Except... art changes and evolves. We wouldn't have old-fashioned musical comedies if not for operetta, and wouldn't have that if not for opera itself, and so on and so on.
